A measurement of the charge and quadrupole form factors of the deuteron would address the most fundamental questions in nuclear physics: validity of perturbative QCD at relatively low momentum transfer, effect of isoscalar meson-exchange currents, and the deuteron structure at short range. Polarization methods will be required in order to provide the separation of these form factors. We propose that the high current of electrons in a storage ring be employed in order to scatter electrons from a gaseous, tensor-polarized, deuterium target.

Tensor polarization observables (t20, t21 and t22) have been measured in elastic electron-deuteron scattering for six values of momentum transfer between 0.66 and 1.7 (GeV/c) 2. The experiment was performed at the Jefferson Laboratory in Hall C using the electron HMS Spectrometer, a specially designed deuteron magnetic channel and the recoil deuteron polarimeter POLDER. The new data determine to much larger Q 2 the deuteron charge form factors GC and GQ. They are in good agreement with relativistic calculations and disagree with pQCD predictions.

In elastic electron-deuteron scattering, the tensor polarization moments t20, t21 and t22, together with the unpolarized cross section, have been measured up to a momentum transfer Q2 of 1.8 (GeV/c)2, thus probing the electromagnetic structure of the deuteron at very short distances. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Laboratory in Hall C using the recoil deuteron polarimeter POLDER in coincidence with the electron spectrometer HMS. It extends considerably the range of tensor polarization data available and provide overlap with previous data. Preliminary results will be presented. t20 is observed to pass through 0 at Q2 near 0.88 (GeV/c)2 and rise to a value close to the allowed maximum in the region of Q2 near 1.8 (GeV/c)2.

This work reports a precision measurement of deuteron tensor analyzing powers T20 and T21 at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator Center. Data were collected simultaneously over a momentum transfer range of 2:15 to 4:5 fm¡1 in the Bates Large Acceptance Spectrometer Toroid (BLAST) with a highly polarized internal gas target. Deuterium form factors GC and GQ were separated using the new data with better precision and the location of the first node of the deuteron monopole form factor was confirmed. The new data provide strong constraints on the nuclear models in a momentum transfer range covering the minima of T20 and the first node of GC.
