Tensile Testing of Soils

Tensile Testing of Soils PDF Author: Mosaid M. Al-Hussaini
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Shear strength of soils
Languages : en
Pages : 124

Book Description
Tensile stresses may exist in many engineering structures, such as rigid and flexible pavements, and within dams and embankments. The existence of tensile stresses in these structures is not harmful; however, these stresses generate tensile strains and if the failure tensile strain is exceeded, the integrity of the structure might be threatened. Most previous research concerned with the behavior of materials under tensile stress has been conducted on brittle materials, such as concrete and rock, while materials such as soils have received little or no attention. Three factors can be considered as the major contributors to this neglect: (a) stability analysis and design practice assume soil to resist compression and shear only, (b) lack of adequate theory which can describe soil behavior under tension with reasonable accuracy, and (c) reliable testing devices which can impose and measure tensile stress and strain have not yet been developed. While information on the tensile behavior of soils is lacking, there exists a relatively large amount of data on the tensile strength of brittle materials as discussed in this report. (Modified author abstract).

Book Description
A mixture of science and art, weaving is nearly as old as human history. Despite the many technological advances in the field, however, it is still virtually impossible to control each individual fiber in a woven structure. To help you meet this and other weaving challenges, Handbook of Weaving covers every step of the process clearly and systemati

Mechanical Properties and Testing of Polymers

Mechanical Properties and Testing of Polymers PDF Author: G.M. Swallowe
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401592314
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 313

Book Description
This volume represents a continuation of the Polymer Science and Technology series edited by Dr. D. M. Brewis and Professor D. Briggs. The theme of the series is the production of a number of stand alone volumes on various areas of polymer science and technology. Each volume contains short articles by a variety of expert contributors outlining a particular topic and these articles are extensively cross referenced. References to related topics included in the volume are indicated by bold text in the articles, the bold text being the title of the relevant article. At the end of each article there is a list of bibliographic references where interested readers can obtain further detailed information on the subject of the article. This volume was produced at the invitation of Derek Brewis who asked me to edit a text which concentrated on the mechanical properties of polymers. There are already many excellent books on the mechanical properties of polymers, and a somewhat lesser number of volumes dealing with methods of carrying out mechanical tests on polymers. Some of these books are listed in Appendix 1. In this volume I have attempted to cover basic mechanical properties and test methods as well as the theory of polymer mechanical deformation and hope that the reader will find the approach useful.
