Book Description
Excerpt from Twenty Years After Record and Directory of the Class of 1883: Princeton University Still to fear God and regard man; to carry the head high, with courage bred by effort and success; to realize that the seed so long since sown has come to fruitage; to feel the strength of sturdy life in joyous living; to meet your fellows with esteem and the future with unshaken spirit; this is to live. Again to meet the comrades of old days; to feel the boy life quicken in the man; to kindle with the success of others, as if with your own; to note with zest the power of one, the humor of another, the attraction of all; to have the heart warm to the old hands, the old faces and the old voices; this is to love. So each, who savored the rollicking sentiment and the pensive joviality of '83's Reunion, may well say "Ich babe geliebt und gelebte." Fifth Year Record

Fifth Year Record PDF Author: Julian B. Beaty

Pages : 410

Book Description
Excerpt from Fifth Year Record: Class of 1906, Princeton University This book is different from others. The indulgence of the Class is asked for the monotony that has been inevitable in the individual letters. However, this form of letter has had a large advantage. No one has written his own biography. Therefore, the editors have had the opportunity of telling much about a man which his modesty would not have permitted him to write. Such a plan may not be valuable continuously but possibly has served a purpose here. For the delay in publication, we would ask the charitable judgment of the Class for reasons that the scope of the book may make evident. We thank the Class for its response to an unusually lengthy circular. We hope this book will help to invigorate the union of devotion among us to Princeton which lives in us not simply in the memory of four years past but in a vital stirring brotherhood. Postclassicisms

Postclassicisms PDF Author: Postclassicisms Collective
Publisher:
ISBN: 022667231X
Category : Classical philology
Languages : en
Pages : 251

Book Description
Made up of nine prominent scholars, The Postclassicisms Collective aims to map a space for theorizing and reflecting on the values attributed to antiquity. The product of these reflections, Postclassicisms takes up a set of questions about what it means to know and care about Greco-Roman antiquity in our turbulent world and offers suggestions for a discipline in transformation, as new communities are being built around the study of the ancient Greco-Roman world. Structured around three primary concepts--value, time, and responsibility--and nine additional concepts, Postclassicisms asks scholars to reflect upon why they choose to work in classics, to examine how proximity to and distance from antiquity has been--and continues to be--figured, and to consider what they seek to accomplish within their own scholarly practices. Together, the authors argue that a stronger critical self-awareness, an enhanced sense of the intellectual history of the methods of classics, and a greater understanding of the ethical and political implications of the decisions that the discipline makes will lead to a more engaged intellectual life, both for classicists and, ultimately, for society. A timely intervention into the present and future of the discipline, Postclassicisms will be required reading for professional classicists and students alike and a model for collaborative disciplinary intervention by scholars in other fields.

Book Description
Excerpt from As We Turn Our Memories Back: Being the Fifth Year Record of the Class of 1909, Princeton University With the pleasure supreme, the rapture extreme, Of filling statistical blanks. We gravely produce some ancestrial facts And the names of our children and wives, And we try to account for our various acts When we've not done a thing in our lives, We think of the books that we never have writ And the churches we do not attend We start to write something, then scratch out a bit, And sign our full names at the end. Our deeds are undone and our songs are unsung, But the students are gradually growing, The poets and statesmen are still rather young But shortly some heads may be showing. Clear and Simple as the Truth

Clear and Simple as the Truth PDF Author: Francis-Noël Thomas
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400887356
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 234

Book Description
Everyone talks about style, but no one explains it. The authors of this book do; and in doing so, they provoke the reader to consider style, not as an elegant accessory of effective prose, but as its very heart. At a time when writing skills have virtually disappeared, what can be done? If only people learned the principles of verbal correctness, the essential rules, wouldn't good prose simply fall into place? Thomas and Turner say no. Attending to rules of grammar, sense, and sentence structure will no more lead to effective prose than knowing the mechanics of a golf swing will lead to a hole-in-one. Furthermore, ten-step programs to better writing exacerbate the problem by failing to recognize, as Thomas and Turner point out, that there are many styles with different standards. In the first half of Clear and Simple, the authors introduce a range of styles--reflexive, practical, plain, contemplative, romantic, prophetic, and others--contrasting them to classic style. Its principles are simple: The writer adopts the pose that the motive is truth, the purpose is presentation, the reader is an intellectual equal, and the occasion is informal. Classic style is at home in everything from business memos to personal letters, from magazine articles to university writing. The second half of the book is a tour of examples--the exquisite and the execrable--showing what has worked and what hasn't. Classic prose is found everywhere: from Thomas Jefferson to Junichirō Tanizaki, from Mark Twain to the observations of an undergraduate. Here are many fine performances in classic style, each clear and simple as the truth. Originally published in 1994. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions.
