The Other Side of Sadness
Author: George A. Bonanno
Publisher: Basic Books
ISBN: 0465019943
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 242
Book Description
A renowned psychologist reveals the power of human resilience in dealing with grief and loss The conventional view of grieving--encapsulated by the famous five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance--is defined by a mourning process that we can only hope to accept and endure. In The Other Side of Sadness, psychologist and emotions expert George Bonanno argues otherwise. Mourning is far from predictable, and all of us share a surprising ability to be resilient. Our inborn emotions--anger and denial, but also relief and joy--help us deal effectively with loss. To expect or require only grief-stricken behavior from the bereaved does them harm. In fact, grieving goes beyond mere sadness, and it can actually deepen interpersonal connections and even lead to a new sense of meaning in life. The Other Side of Sadness is a must-read for those going through the death of a loved one, mental health professionals, readers interested in neuroscience and positive psychology, and anyone eager to understand our ability to thrive in the face of adversity.

The Other Side of Zen
Author: Duncan Ryūken Williams
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400832594
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 257
Book Description
Popular understanding of Zen Buddhism typically involves a stereotyped image of isolated individuals in meditation, contemplating nothingness. This book presents the "other side of Zen," by examining the movement's explosive growth during the Tokugawa period (1600-1867) in Japan and by shedding light on the broader Japanese religious landscape during the era. Using newly-discovered manuscripts, Duncan Ryuken Williams argues that the success of Soto Zen was due neither to what is most often associated with the sect, Zen meditation, nor to the teachings of its medieval founder Dogen, but rather to the social benefits it conveyed. Zen Buddhism promised followers many tangible and attractive rewards, including the bestowal of such perquisites as healing, rain-making, and fire protection, as well as "funerary Zen" rites that assured salvation in the next world. Zen temples also provided for the orderly registration of the entire Japanese populace, as ordered by the Tokugawa government, which led to stable parish membership. Williams investigates both the sect's distinctive religious and ritual practices and its nonsectarian participation in broader currents of Japanese life. While much previous work on the subject has consisted of passages on great medieval Zen masters and their thoughts strung together and then published as "the history of Zen," Williams' work is based on care ul examination of archival sources including temple logbooks, prayer and funerary manuals, death registries, miracle tales of popular Buddhist deities, secret initiation papers, villagers' diaries, and fund-raising donor lists.

Whispers from the Other Side
Author: Arturo Cantu Rivera
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1664166114
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 168
Book Description
Thirty years in prison has a dramatic impact in the human soul. It either kills you or forces you to change one way or another. In my case it did both, killed the old self and gave birth to a new outlook in life. This work was written during my incarceration, 1989-2019, and rescued by my sister Hilda after my release. It represents reflections of the spirit and its evolution throughout said period of time. Unlike other books of its kind, this work does not speak directly of the shortcomings of prison life, rather, it focuses on the search for spiritual understanding of our fate as human beings, of our human condition. It depicts a spirit in motion towards the light of the inner self. May these reflections find solace in the land of wandering souls.

On the Other Side of Sorrow
Author: James Hunter
Publisher: Casemate Publishers
ISBN: 0857908340
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 196
Book Description
“An extraordinary intellectual voyage” through Gaelic environmental awareness, centuries ahead of its time, and its value today (The Herald). Caring for the environment, developing rural communities, and ensuring the survival of minority cultures are all laudable objectives, but they can conflict, and nowhere more so than the Scottish Highlands. As environmentalists strive to preserve the scenery and wildlife of the Highlands, the people who belong there, and who have their own claims on the landscape, question this new threat to their culture, which dates back thousands of years. In this sensitive, thought-provoking book, James Hunter probes deep into this culture to examine the dispute between Highlanders, who developed a strong environmental awareness a thousand years before other Europeans, and conservationists, whose thinking owes much to the romantic ideals of the nineteenth century. More than that, he also suggests a new way of dealing with the problem, advocating drastic land-use changes and the repopulation of empty glens—an approach that has worldwide implications. “A very thoughtful piece of advocacy.” —The Scotsman
