Book Description
Excerpt from Temair Breg: A Study of the Remains and Traditions of Tara True, VD iii 103 sqq. Says, or appears to say, that Nemnach is east of Mur Tea, and that the houses of Temair Were scattered around Tech Mairisend, which was on its margin. This, so far as it goes, would seem at first sight more favourable to Petrie's identification for his Nemnacli is close to the modern village, and is about east of the site of Mur Tea. 311t, in the first place, it is a mere assumption that the houses of the ancient village, which doubtless stood at or near the royal dwellings, were on the site of the modern village.2 In the second place, it is not certain that the passage before us really asserts that N emnach was east of the structure called Mur Tea; rather does it intend to say that it was cast of the whole site of Temair, a-condition satisfied by its being on the eastern slope of the ridge. Meti-ical exigencies prevented the author of the poem from saying that the well was south-east of the settlement. The writer of pi) had no such difficulties to contend with, and his version of the direction in which we are to look for the well is therefore to be preferred. Against Petrie's identification it may further be argued with fairness that, if it were sound, it would not be easy to understand why the author of il'd mentioned Nemnach first in the list of notable places of Temair; while if the well were at the place now suggested. Landscape with Two Saints

Landscape with Two Saints PDF Author: Lisa M. Bitel
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199887489
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 441

Book Description
Lisa Bitel uses the history of two unique holy women--Genovefa of Paris (ca. 420-509) and Brigit of Kildare (ca.452-524)--to reveal how ordinary Europeans lived through Christianization at the dawn of the Middle Ages. Most converts did not have a sudden epiphany, Bitel argues. Instead they learned and lived their new religion in continuous conversation with preachers, saints, rulers, and neighbors. Together, they built their faith over many years, brick by brick, into their churches and shrines, cemeteries, houses, and even their markets and farms.
