En los últimos veinte años las técnicas de análisis multivariante han tenido una gran aceptación en la mayor parte de las áreas de investigación de las ciencias sociales y biomédicas. No vamos a entrar en las muchas razones que pueden explicar su creciente expansión, aunque sí queremos insistir en que, a pesar de la rápida difusión y la facilidad de cálculos, no siempre resulta fácil para el investigador la adecuada utilización de las técnicas multivariantes. A ello contribuye la pobre bibliografía que hay en español al respecto. La obra que presentamos pretende paliar los problemas aludidos, abordando las técnicas del análisis multivariante en un lenguaje asequible para aquellos lectores que posean una formación matemática elemental. El contenido se ha estructurado en cuatro capítulos: en el primero se abordan los conceptos fundamentales del análisis multivariante; en el segundo se analizan los procedimientos necesarios para la correcta aplicación de la mayor parte de las técnicas multivariantes; en los capítulos tercero y cuarto se presentan en forma abreviada algunas técnicas de uso común, con la finalidad de que el lector pueda adquirir un conocimiento del funcionamiento del análisis multivariante y su utilidad en la investigación. La división en los dos capítulos responde a la clasificación habitual de las técnicas, según estén dirigidas al análisis de relaciones de dependencia (capítulo tercero), o de interdependencia (capítulo cuarto) entre las variables. Todas las técnicas se presentan con datos de investigaciones reales realizadas por nuestro equipo, en las que se puede apreciar la complejidad de los problemas mucho mejor que con datos artificiales y simplificados.
