Book Description
Advances in Thermal Energy Storage Systems, 2nd edition, presents a fully updated comprehensive analysis of thermal energy storage systems (TES) including all major advances and developments since the first edition published. This very successful publication provides readers with all the information related to TES in one resource, along with a variety of applications across the energy/power and construction sectors, as well as, new to this edition, the transport industry. After an introduction to TES systems, editor Dr. Prof. Luisa Cabeza and her team of expert authors consider the source, design and operation of the use of water, molten salts, concrete, aquifers, boreholes and a variety of phase-change materials for TES systems, before analyzing and simulating underground TES systems. This edition benefits from 5 new chapters covering the most advanced technologies including sorption systems, thermodynamic and dynamic modelling as well as applications to the transport industry and the environmental and economic aspects of TES. It will benefit researchers and academics of energy systems and thermal energy storage, construction engineering academics, engineers and practitioners in the energy and power industry, as well as architects of plants and storage systems and R&D managers. Includes 5 brand new chapters covering Sorption systems, Thermodynamic and dynamic models, applications to the transport sector, environmental aspects of TES and economic aspects of TES All existing chapters are updated and revised to reflect the most recent advances in the research and technologies of the field Reviews heat storage technologies, including the use of water, molten salts, concrete and boreholes in one comprehensive resource Describes latent heat storage systems and thermochemical heat storage Includes information on the monitoring and control of thermal energy storage systems, and considers their applications in residential buildings, power plants and industry

High-lift Chemical Heat Pump Technologies for Industrial Processes

High-lift Chemical Heat Pump Technologies for Industrial Processes PDF Author:

Book Description
Traditionally industrial heat pumps (IHPs) have found applications on a process specific basis with reject heat from a process being upgraded and returned to the process. The IHP must be carefully integrated into a process since improper placement may result in an uneconomic application. Industry has emphasized a process integration approach to the design and operation of their plants. Heat pump applications have adopted this approach and the area of applicability was extended by utilizing a process integrated approach where reject heat from one process is upgraded and then used as input for another process. The DOE IHP Program has extended the process integration approach of heat pump application with a plant utility emphasis. In this design philosophy, reject heat from a process is upgraded to plant utility conditions and fed into the plant distribution system. This approach has the advantage that reject heat from any pr@s can be used as input and the output can be used at any location within the plant. Thus the approach can be easily integrated into existing industrial applications and all reject heat streams are potential targets of opportunity. The plant utility approach can not be implemented without having heat pumps with high-lift capabilities (on the order of 65°C). Current heat pumps have only about half the lift capability required. Thus the current emphasis for the DOE IHP Program is the development of high lift chemical heat pumps that can deliver heat more economically to higher heat delivery temperatures. This is achieved with innovative cooling (refrigeration) and heating technologies which are based on advanced cycles and advanced working fluids or a combination of both. This paper details the plan to develop economically competitive, environmentally acceptable heat pump technologies that are capable of providing the delivery temperature and lift required to supply industrial plant utility-grade process heating and/or cooling.

Heat Pumps in Chemical Process Industry

Heat Pumps in Chemical Process Industry PDF Author: Anton A. Kiss
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1498719031
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 525

Book Description
As the chemical process industry is among the most energy demanding sectors, chemical engineers are endeavoring to contribute towards sustainable future. Due to the limitation of fossil fuels, the need for energy independence, as well as the environmental problem of the greenhouse gas effect, there is a large increasing interest in the research and development of chemical processes that require less capital investment and reduced operating costs and lead to high eco-efficiency. The use of heat pumps is a hot topic due to many advantages, such as low energy requirements as well as an increasing number of industrial applications. Therefore, in the current book, authors are focusing on use of heat pumps in the chemical industry, providing an overview of heat pump technology as applied in the chemical process industry, covering both theoretical and practical aspects: working principle, applied thermodynamics, theoretical background, numerical examples and case studies, as well as practical applications. The worked-out examples have been included to instruct students, engineers and process designers about how to design various heat pumps used in the industry. Reader friendly resources namely relevant equations, diagrams, figures and references that reflect the current and upcoming heat pump technologies, will be of great help to all readers from the chemical and petrochemical industry, biorefineries and other related areas.

Techno-economic Viability of Upgrading Industrial Thermal Effluents Using Heat Pumps

Techno-economic Viability of Upgrading Industrial Thermal Effluents Using Heat Pumps PDF Author: G.. Thavalingam
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 97

Book Description
Viability of upgrading industrial thermal effluents using different types of multi-stage heat pumps was investigated using technical and economical parameters. Mathematical models were developed for multi-stage vapor compression heat pump and steam jet compressor while "Grossman absorption model" was used to study multi-stage absorption heat transformer. Cascading stages of compression was found to boost the performance of VCHP with water performing better than R11, R113 and R114 as the refrigerant. Exponential increase of mass flow rate beyond a particular temperature boost always limits the performance of steam jet compressors. Two stage double effect heat transformer overcomes the limitation of temperature boost attainable by the single stage heat transformer. Eleven different heat pump systems formulated were compared based on COP, primary energy ratio, primary energy saving, annuity and dynamic pay back period. Economic analysis was carried out taking capital cost, maintenance cost and operating cost into account. Most of the types of heat pumps which were found technically viable were also acceptable economically. The economic analysis is not rigorous due to the lack of updated and reliable cost data from manufacturers. One of the possible applications of heat pumps in process industry namely distillation process requiring low pressure steam with heating capacity of 7090 kW, was investigated for integrating heat pumps. A single stage absorption heat transformer applied in this case can save US dollars 256,740 annually and can pay back its investment in two years.
