The purpose of this study is to determine if Microteaching Lesson Study supports teachers in improving their art of teaching by creating a collaborative environment where choice and refinement of instructional strategy choices increase student learning. It also determines how teachers perceive whether student learning outcomes were influenced by their use of MLS. The results of this study could provide insight into the use of MLS as a topic for professional development offered within school districts. This dissertation consisted of a qualitative case study in which data was collected and analyzed from four middle school teachers participating in one full cycle of MLS as well as pre and post interviews about their experience. The MLS cycle consisted of an initial lesson planning session, teaching/recording of the lesson, a reflection/planning meeting, teaching/recording of the lesson, and a post reflection session. All four educators also participated in a MLS professional development session led by the researcher prior to the MLS cycle. All data collected from both interviews and the MLS cycle was coded in order to analyze the data. Codes included overall microteaching lesson study experience, instructional strategy knowledge, reflection, student learning outcomes and collegial interactions/ collaboration. The findings of this case study suggest that Microteaching Lesson Study is a beneficial form of professional development that, when used appropriately in the classroom setting, can impact teachers’ choices of instructional strategies being implemented into lessons, and can increase teacher knowledge of effective instructional strategies, thus increasing student engagement and knowledge gained. This case study provided data on Microteaching Lesson Study in an environment where students were learning in a hybrid model of both in-person and virtual instruction, and where the researcher was an administrator. The researcher believes that the next logical steps for future study should include a multi-year study on how MLS impacts instructional strategies implemented in face-to-face classrooms, as well as an exploration of how these strategies impact student engagement and student learning outcomes.
