Who's Going to Look at You? PDF Author: Mark Eden

Category : Biography & Autobiography

Pages : 256

Book Description
As the evil Alan Bradley in ITV’s long-running soap Coronation Street, Mark Eden was the most hated man in Britain. Almost 27 million viewers switched on to watch him get his just deserts under the wheels of a Blackpool tram; making it the third highest viewing figure ever recorded in the UK.Now, as our senior soap opera celebrates its remarkable 50th anniversary, three-times married actor Mark Eden is publishing his enthralling autobiography. And although Alan Bradley was voted ‘Britain’s Biggest Rat’ by The Sun newspaper, Mark’s book is about much more than just his memorable time in Coronation Street.Born in 1928 – the same year as Mickey Mouse! – Mark’s extraordinary life tells of the trauma of evacuation from London at the beginning of the war, the terror of the Blitz, and his early career as a seaside fairground photographer (complete with a monkey!) before becoming an actor. He reveals how he lost his virginity at the age of 19 with an amorous night nurse while recovering from TB in hospital; and how his good looks brought success with women and early stardom on stage and screen. He worked at the Royal Court with the English Stage Company, and with the Royal Shakespeare Company and appeared in many fine films including: Seance on a wet Afternoon, Heavens Above, Attack on the Iron Coast and The L-shaped Room; and in classic TV series such as Dr Who, The Prisoner and The Saint. Mark is frank and funny about every detail of his fascinating life: his tempestuous affair with Dorothy Squires, his failed attempts to seduce Judi Dench, and being carried upstairs, dead drunk, by Peter O’Toole.Still on good terms with his two ex wives, Mark is now very happily married to the popular Coronation Street star Sue Nicholls. “She is the best thing that ever happened to me,” says Mark. “I’m a very fortunate man. At the age of 56, with two failed marriages behind me, I meet the love of my life. How lucky is that?”‘Who’s Going To Look At You?’ was Mark’s mother’s reaction when he told her he was going to become an actor. She lived to be 100 years old; long enough to learn that the answer to her question was perhaps, world wide, a billion people! Enjoy.

Understanding the Host Immune Response Against Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection

Understanding the Host Immune Response Against Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection PDF Author: Vishwanath Venketaraman
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319973673
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 149

Book Description
According to the World Health Organization, approximately one third of the world’s population is latently infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb [LTBI]), of whom about 9 million have active tuberculosis (TB). It is estimated that approximately 2 million individuals die each year from active TB. An estimated 14.4% of these individuals have HIV and M. tb co-infection. TB has long been known to be one of the leading causes of death in HIV-infected individuals. Recent evidence now indicates that individuals with type 2 diabetes, the elderly, and chronic smokers are also increasingly susceptible to TB infection, the ability of their immune system to fight off active TB infection having been compromised by their condition. This book therefore aims to provide a detailed review of recent advances in the research that involves characterizing the host’s immune responses against TB infection in conditions such as HIV, diabetes, chronic cigarette smoking and aging, and strategies to restore favorable immune responses against this deadly pathogen.

WHO consolidated guidelines on tuberculosis. Module 4

WHO consolidated guidelines on tuberculosis. Module 4 PDF Author: World Health Organization
Publisher: World Health Organization
ISBN: 9240007040
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 120

Book Description
BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) strains with drug resistance (DR-TB) are more difficult to treat than drug-susceptible ones, and threaten global progress towards the targets set by the End TB Strategy of the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO estimates that about half a million cases of multi-drug or rifampicin resistant (MDR/RR-TB) are estimated to occur each year. However, only one third were estimated to have accessed effective treatment and of those, just over half had a successful treatment outcome. Therefore, there is a pressing need for evidence-based policy recommendations on the treatment and care of patients with DR-TB, based on the most recent and comprehensive evidence available. In this regard, the WHO Consolidated Guidelines on Tuberculosis, Module 4: Treatment - Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis Treatment fulfills the mandate of WHO to inform health care professionals in Member States on how to improve treatment and care for patients with DR-TB. The 2020 recommendations on drug resistant TB treatment are contained in the second module to be released under the rubric of WHO Consolidated Guidelines on Tuberculosis (Module 4: Treatment). The WHO Consolidated Guidelines on Tuberculosis will group all TB recommendations in one document and will be complemented by matching modules of a consolidated operational handbook. The operational handbook will provide practical advice on how to put in place the recommendations at the scale needed to achieve national and global impact. OVERVIEW: Between 2011 and 2019, WHO has developed and issued evidence-based policy recommendations on the treatment and care of patients with DR-TB. These policy recommendations have been presented in several WHO documents and their associated annexes, including the WHO Consolidated Guidelines on Drug Resistant Tuberculosis Treatment, issued by WHO in March 2019. The policy recommendations in each of these guidelines have been developed by WHO-convened Guideline Development Groups, using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach to summarize the evidence, and formulate policy recommendations and accompanying remarks. The present WHO Consolidated Guidelines on Tuberculosis, Module 4: Treatment - Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis Treatment includes a comprehensive set of WHO recommendations for the treatment and care of DR-TB. The document includes two new recommendations, one on the composition of shorter regimens and one on the use of the BPaL regimen (i.e. bedaquiline, pretomanid and linezolid). In addition, the consolidated guidelines include existing recommendations on treatment regimens for isoniazid-resistant TB and MDR/RR-TB, including longer regimens, culture monitoring of patients on treatment, the timing of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in MDR/RR-TB patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the use of surgery for patients receiving MDR-TB treatment, and optimal models of patient support and care. The guidelines are to be used primarily in national TB programmes, or their equivalents in Ministries of Health, and for other policy-makers and technical organizations working on TB and infectious diseases in public and private sectors and in the community.

Television and Health Responsibility in an Age of Individualism

Television and Health Responsibility in an Age of Individualism PDF Author: Katherine A. Foss
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 0739189948
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 134

Book Description
American society centers on individualism, celebrating personal choice even at the expense of collective progress. As part of this emphasis on agency, Americans value freedom for health decisions, and individual health professionals and consumers are held responsible for the nation’s health, often at the expense of improving the overall healthcare system. Such individualistic discourse, disseminated and reinforced through American media, has created resistance and hostility toward health policy initiatives such as the Affordable Care Act and other legislation aimed to improve American healthcare. Television and Health Responsibility in an Age of Individualism examines the relationship between entertainment and health responsibility in the United States. Through the analysis of contemporary television medical dramas, Foss explores how these media texts help shape and perpetuate ideologies that have and continue to encourage resistance to healthcare reform that shifts responsibility away from individuals to government and other institutions.
