Figuring Out the Tax

Figuring Out the Tax PDF Author: Lawrence Zelenak
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108383807
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
Figuring Out the Tax recounts the forgotten early development of the federal income tax in the US, resulting from the interplay between Congress and the Treasury Department in the decades following the enactment of the tax in 1913. It covers a wide range of topics including the income tax treatments of marriage, capital losses, charitable contributions and homeownership, as well as the rise, demise and resurrection of income tax withholding. Lawrence Zelenak deftly illustrates how the income tax achieved its current form through a range of stories which are new to tax history scholarship and involve some remarkable personalities and surprising plot twists. Although of particular interest to tax academics and professionals, this book will also serve as a useful introduction to the development of income tax for undergraduate students and law students.

About the authors: Michael A. York, EA (Michael A. York & Associates, Salt Lake City, UT) literally grew up in a CPA firm - his dad didn't teach him how to fix anything, he taught Michael how to deduct it, and Michael has spent decades focusing on nothing but taxes. Andrew L. Stevens, EA, MBA (Houston Tax Advisors, Houston, TX) began working in that same tax firm in 1999, and has since gone to business school, worked in management consulting, started a business and sold it, all while remaining grounded to his roots in taxes. When Michael and Andrew sat down to compare notes, they started with the question, "What is the best thing we have found to educate clients about tax strategy?" Their answers were identical: relatable stories! No one likes code sections and very few understand tax language, but everyone can relate to (and remember!) real stories about real people. So they wrote a book full of real stories about how real people save real money on their taxes, and the best part is that you can use these strategies, too! Allotment Stories

Allotment Stories PDF Author: Daniel Heath Justice
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 1452962707
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 697

Book Description
More than two dozen stories of Indigenous resistance to the privatization and allotment of Indigenous lands Land privatization has been a longstanding and ongoing settler colonial process separating Indigenous peoples from their traditional homelands, with devastating consequences. Allotment Stories delves into this conflict, creating a complex conversation out of narratives of Indigenous communities resisting allotment and other dispossessive land schemes. From the use of homesteading by nineteenth-century Anishinaabe women to maintain their independence to the role that roads have played in expropriating Guam’s Indigenous heritage to the links between land loss and genocide in California, Allotment Stories collects more than two dozen chronicles of white imperialism and Indigenous resistance. Ranging from the historical to the contemporary and grappling with Indigenous land struggles around the globe, these narratives showcase both scholarly and creative forms of expression, constructing a multifaceted book of diverse disciplinary perspectives. Allotment Stories highlights how Indigenous peoples have consistently used creativity to sustain collective ties, kinship relations, and cultural commitments in the face of privatization. At once informing readers while provoking them toward further research into Indigenous resilience, this collection pieces back together some of what the forces of allotment have tried to tear apart. Mark's Memory Resources and the Controversy Stories (Mark 2:1-3:6)

Mark's Memory Resources and the Controversy Stories (Mark 2:1-3:6) PDF Author: Yoon-Man Park
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9047443926
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 364

Book Description
This book is a study of the New Testament using the insights of modern linguistics. Its principal concern, above all, is to examine how the Gospel of Mark, produced in an oral-aural culture, may be illuminated by frame theory from cognitive linguistics, a linguistic theory in which the meaning of a word, phrase, clause, sentence, paragraph and thematic unit can only be properly understood against the background of a particular body of knowledge and assumptions. The reason this theory is particulary useful for understanding Mark's ancient text is because as an oral-aural narrative it heavily relies on human memory (cognitive) resources; and so the cognitive theory leads us into a better understanding of ways in which the text is communicated in terms of cognitive processing.
