The Esoteric Tarot
Author: Ronald Decker
Publisher: Quest Books
ISBN: 0835630838
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 344
Book Description
That the Tarot originated in ancient Egypt as a divinatory tool is a romantic misconception. Ron Decker’s meticulous scholarship will surprise practitioners and academics alike, revealing the Tarot’s true evolution and meanings as its inventor(s) understood it. The Tarot consists of the Minor Arcana, four suits of cards similar to our modern deck, and the Major Arcana, twenty-two allegorical or “trump” cards. Decker says the four-suit deck was invented in Asia Minor before AD 1000; Italian courtiers added the trumps in the 1400s. But Tarot was first used as a game. Tarot divination was only created in the 1700s by a Parisian fortuneteller who based the trump images on Hermeticism, which merges Greco-Egyptian alchemy, astrology, numerology, magic, and mysticism. Today, the suit-cards are often traced to the ancient Jewish Cabala. But, says Decker, they, too, acquired their meanings only in the 1700s, and he cites a lost numerical system based on Cabala at that time Decker’s interpretation integrates three whole systems-astrological, arithmological, mystagogical (concerning initiation rites into the Mysteries). His depth of knowledge makes the book a must-have for serious students of Tarot and esotericism

Esoteric Symbols
Author: June O. Leavitt
Publisher: University Press of America
ISBN: 9780761836735
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 182
Book Description
In this pioneering scholarly work on occult symbols in literature, the reader is offered a vivid look into how W.B. Yeats, T.S. Eliot, and Franz Kafka--three masters of symbolic expression--utilized Tarot cards in their poetry and prose. Focusing on the Tarot's ancient associations with divine knowledge, its pictorial representation of both the Jewish and Christian Cabala, and the Tarot's more recent pedestrian affiliation with the occult, June Leavitt skillfully demonstrates how Yeats, Eliot, and Kafka align themselves in their uniquely individual ways with the Tarot symbols' mapping of reality. Paying close attention to the mystical nuances of the Tarot, Ms. Leavitt shows how Tarot symbols allow for radically new readings of the texts in which they are situated, and play a transformative role in the three writers' search for God. This search remained indecisive for Kafka, resulted in Eliot's conversion to Anglo-Catholicism, and went hand in hand with Yeats' passion for pagan gods and angels. The One Life
Author: Antonella Riem
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 434
Book Description
"For the first time, a monographic study of Coleridge's work extensively uncovers the connections of his poetry with the Hindu view of life. This study investigates Coleridge's philosophical and spiritual itinerary; it originally contributes in showing the strong impact the first translations of some texts of Hinduism had on the author's psyche, philosophical approach and poetical inspiration. In addition, Coleridge's unpublished manuscript notes found in one of the Abb J. A. Dubois' seminal studies of India are here presented as proof of the poet's long standing interest in and frequentation of Hinduism. Inclined to investigate the complexities of the human condition, both poetically and philosophically, Coleridge has tried to resolve the extremes of human existence through a synthesis of both Western and Oriental visions through which the universe ultimately emerges as an organic cosmos rhythmically unfolding through an intricate web of influxes, echoes and correspondences. Antonella Riem Natale's scholarly work invites readers to participate in the open-ended adventure of Coleridge's quest toward the Divine One and its multi-faceted layers of existence by originally combining textual analysis with all recent literary criticism and inter-disciplinary investigations, encompassing mythological, anthropological, philosophical, scientific and historical fields of study. Weaving personal facets of Coleridge's artistic sensibility with the Hindu world-view, the underlying metaphysical concerns that were integral to his vision of art and existence are thus unravelled in a coherent and poignant reinterpretation of an extraordinary poet and his times."

The History of the Occult Tarot
Author: Ronald Decker
Publisher: Prelude Books
ISBN: 0715647059
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 409
Book Description
An essential volume for the libraries of all serious students of the Tarot. When the Tarot was invented in Italy during the early fifteenth century, it was simply a pack of cards used for playing games. Esoteric interpretations of the pack date from late eighteenth century France, and were confined to that country for a hundred years. But today the cards are used throughout the world and not only for fortune telling - for true believers they are the key to secret knowledge and the meaning of life. A History of the Occult Tarot is the classic work on the history of the Tarot deck and its use in occult circles. Starting with the late nineteenth century, the Decker and Dummett examine how the Tarot became the favoured divination tool of occultists, a bridge to the spirit world, and a map of the unconscious. From Theosophical to Aleister Crowley to the Order of the Golden Dawn and P.D. Ouspensky, this compelling survey of the Tarot's history describes the many fascinating decks imagined over time as well as the secret histories of mystics.

Esotheric themes in theology
Author: Róbert Sarka
Publisher: EDUCatt - Ente per il diritto allo studio universitario dell'Università Cattolica
ISBN: 8867807978
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 167
Book Description
During the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church opened itself to a dialogue, which became its communication tool with the world, with other Christian denominations and religions. At the end of the 19th century, so called new religious movements and new magical movements started to appear, which are still currently expanding. Is it possible to lead a dialogue with new religious movements (NRM)?1 A dialogue is an inseparable part of the Church’s mission, therefore neither can the NRM be excluded. However, to have a dialogue with them, the correct preparation is needed, because a great variability exists amongst the NRM. In this dialogue, it is also necessary to take into account the risks from the side of the NRM’s participants, who may try to abuse it for their own promotion, e.g. as happened when some of the NRM’s participants showed photographs from a general audience with the pope, or photographs with Mother Theresa, as proof of a support of their activities. Another form of abuse can be the publishing of their own doctrines in the Catholic Publishing Houses. The statements of some forms of NRM, concerning the possibility of double memberships, thus actually remaining as a member of the Catholic Church, but at the same time being a disciple of some occult community, are also of a great danger2. It is necessary to think about these pitfalls during the dialogue. The dialogue should also not be detached from the proclamation; in this case it is about keeping fidelity to the Catholic faith. I would also like to stick to this criterion in the submitted monograph about esoteric themes in theology. Excerpt from the Introduction
