Book Description
Tang Yin (1470-1524), better known by his courtesy name Tang Bohu, was a Chinese scholar, painter, calligrapher, and poet of the Ming Dynasty whose life story has become a part of popular lore. Tang Yin is one of the most famous painters in the history of Chinese art. He was a pupil of the great Shen Zhou (1427-1509) and a friend of Wen Zhengming (1470-1559). While Tang Yin is associated with paintings of feminine beauty, his paintings (especially landscapes) otherwise exhibit the same variety and expression of his peers and reveal a man of both artistic skill and profound insight. Tang Yin perfected an admirable hand in the semi-cursive script (also known as running script). His poems touch on themes which people like Wen Zhengming or the older Shen Zhou would have never taken up.

The Conservation of Cave 85 at the Mogao Grottoes, Dunhuang

The Conservation of Cave 85 at the Mogao Grottoes, Dunhuang PDF Author: Neville Agnew
Publisher: Getty Publications
ISBN: 1606061577
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 476

Book Description
The Mogao Grottoes, a World Heritage Site in northwestern China, are located along the ancient caravan routes—collectively known as the Silk Road—that once linked China with the West. Founded by a Buddhist monk in the late fourth century, Mogao flourished over the following millennium, as monks, local rulers, and travelers commissioned hundreds of cave temples cut into a mile-long rock cliff and adorned them with vibrant murals. More than 490 decorated grottoes remain, containing thousands of sculptures and some 45,000 square meters of wall paintings, making Mogao one of the world’s most significant sites of Buddhist art. In 1997 the Getty Conservation Institute, which had been working with the Dunhuang Academy since 1989, began a case study using the Late–Tang dynasty Cave 85 to develop a methodology that would stabilize the deteriorating wall paintings. This abundantly illustrated volume is the definitive report on the project, which was completed in 2010.

Graphics and Text in the Production of Technical Knowledge in China

Graphics and Text in the Production of Technical Knowledge in China PDF Author: Francesca Bray
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9047422651
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 786

Book Description
This collection offers a challenging new interpretation of technical knowledge in Chinese thought and practice. Conveying technical knowledge in China through charts, plans or drawings (tu) dates back to antiquity. Earlier studies focused on specialised forms of tu like maps or drawings of machines. Here, however, tu is identified in Chinese terms, viz. as a philosophical category of knowledge production: visual templates for action, spanning a range from mandala to modernist mapping projects, inseparable from writing but with distinctive powers of communication. A distinction is made between two principal types of tu: ritual/symbolic and representational, highlighting essential issues such as historical shifts in their significance, the relations between tu and political power, media for inscribing tu and the impact of printing, and encounters with the West.

ISBN: 0307482804
Category : Young Adult Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
More than 800,000 copies in print! From the author of critically acclaimed and bestselling memoir Falling Leaves, this is a poignant and moving true account of her childhood, growing up as an unloved daughter in 1940s China. A Chinese proverb says, "Falling leaves return to their roots." In her own courageous voice, Adeline Yen Mah returns to her roots to tell the story of her painful childhood and her ultimate triumph in the face of despair. Adeline's affluent, powerful family considers her bad luck after her mother dies giving birth to her, and life does not get any easier when her father remarries. Adeline and her siblings are subjected to the disdain of her stepmother, while her stepbrother and stepsister are spoiled with gifts and attention. Although Adeline wins prizes at school, they are not enough to compensate for what she really yearns for -- the love and understanding of her family. Like the classic Cinderella story, this powerful memoir is a moving story of resilience and hope. Includes an Author's Note, a 6-page photo insert, a historical note, and the Chinese text of the original Chinese Cinderella. A PW BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR AN ALA-YALSA BEST BOOK FOR YOUNG ADULTS “One of the most inspiring books I have ever read.” –The Guardian

How to Respond to Strangeness in Art

How to Respond to Strangeness in Art PDF Author: David B. Greene
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
Working through four case studies, this book focuses on conceptual issues involved in coming to grips with works of art that bear significant marks of more than one culture. The case studies examine Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, Ming landscape paintings, Iranian rugs, and Guatemalan architecture, textiles and folktales, and distinguish between joining these elements and merely juxtaposing, blending or mixing them.
