From being just an ordinary fan who had attended Doctor Who conventions and events since 1997, Karen was now experiencing The Other Side of the Table - being asked for autographs, being photographed, selling books and giving interviews. This second book covers the events she attended from September 2010 to July 2011 and includes her meeting over 100 of the Doctor Who cast and crew, star names such as Arthur Darvill, Colin Baker, Paul McGann, Kate O'Mara, Jacqueline Pearce, Barbara Shelley, Peter Purves, Bonnie Langford and Floella Benjamin. The Other Side of the Table also includes her views on the new series of Doctor Who, her ten hours spent watching an episode being filmed and her personal tributes to Nicholas Courtney and Elisabeth Sladen. The Other Side of the Table is written in Karen's chatty, fun and light-hearted style. If readers attended any of the events mentioned, this book will hopefully bring back some great memories and for those that didn't go - well, now you will know what you missed!

Serpent in the Cellar

Serpent in the Cellar PDF Author: Tom Strelow
Publisher: Xrysalus Media
ISBN:
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 708

Book Description
The Serpent is a complex moral archetype in mythology. As the Viper, it is a dark force lurking in the shadows waiting to strike. As a sacred mediary, it may represent the power of healing and perpetual life, or the wisdom of the gods. The Serpent on the Tree of Morality weaves the mythological fabric of moral development underlying the three Abrahamic religions. While the institutional ideologies often lose this thread, the authentic myth is vitally an ancient psychology of love founded on empathy, altruism, generosity, and support within the inclusive boundaries of a universal human family uninhibited by caste, custom, conduct, or creed. Serpent In the Cellar explores the psychodynamics of this ancient psychology to reveal the deeper pathways of personal power and prosocial morality—cultivating a mature conscience, strengthening trust in community, and inspiring genuine love for one another.

Migration, Modernity and Transnationalism in the Work of Joseph Conrad

Migration, Modernity and Transnationalism in the Work of Joseph Conrad PDF Author: Kim Salmons
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350168939
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
Examining the notion of migration and transnationalism within the life and work of Joseph Conrad, this book situates the multicultural and transnational characters that comprise his fiction while locating Conrad as a subject of the Russian state whose provenance is Polish, but whose identity is that of a merchant sailor and English country gentleman. Conrad's characters are often marked by crossings – changes of nation, changes of culture, changes of identity – which refract Conrad's own cultural transitions. These crossings not only subjectivise the experience of the migrant through the modern complexities of technology and speed, but also through cross-cultural encounters of food and language. Collectively, these essays explore the experience of the migrant as exile; the inescapable intermeshing of migration, modernity and transnationalism as well as Conrad's own global and multicultural outlook. Conrad's work writes across historical, political and ethnic borders speaking to a transnational reality that continues to have relevance today.

Dark Nights, Bright Lights

Dark Nights, Bright Lights PDF Author: Susanne Bach
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110415291
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
Light and darkness shape our perception of the world. This is true in a literal sense, but also metaphorically: in theology, philosophy, literature and the arts the light of day signifies life, safety, knowledge and all that is good, while the darkness of the night suggests death, danger, ignorance and evil. A closer inspection, however, reveals that things are not quite so clear cut and that light and darkness cannot be understood as simple binary opposites. On a biological level, for example, daylight and darkness are inseparable factors in the calibration of our circadian rhythms, and a lack of periodical darkness appears to be as contrary to health as a lack of exposure to sunlight. On a cultural level, too, night and darkness are far from being universally condemnable: in fiction, drama and poetry the darkness of the night allows not only nightmares but also dreams, it allows criminals to ply their trade and allows lovers to meet, it allows the pursuit of pleasure as well as deep thought, it allows metamorphoses, transformations and transgressions unthinkable in the light of day. But night is not merely darkness. The night gains significance as an alternative space, as an ‘other of the day’, only when it is at least partially illuminated. The volume examines the interconnection of night, darkness and nocturnal illumination across a broad range of literary texts. The individual essays examine historically specific light conditions in literature, tracing the symbolic and metaphoric content of darkness and illumination and the attitudes towards them.

The Great Big Book of Ghosts

The Great Big Book of Ghosts PDF Author: Robert J Dornan
Publisher: Robert J Dornan
ISBN:
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 429

Book Description
The book you are about to read is a reference book that you can turn to for decades to come. I made sure to add fifty true ghost stories from across the globe to spice up the book against the chapters of informative research. I should mention that the ghost stories – other than the London Tower - are in a random order so as to eliminate country repetition. You’ll notice that no matter what country is being represented, the stories all have similar backdrops, meaning that ghosts are not only universal, but far from unique to any specific culture. Nor are they limited to a group of countries. Every nation in the world has their own legends and haunted homes, castles, or battlefields. I enjoyed every second of creating this reference book and I sincerely hope it is a learning experience for you as well as a thought provoking, or creative muse to writers, poets and filmmakers. If you are someone considering a career in the paranormal or paranormal investigation, you must read this book instead of relying on video nonsense. Enjoy and try not to read too much before sleeping as many of these stories are not only engrossing but also horrifying.
