As a public health nurse I spent time with the Alaska Natives and as I became acquainted with them, I learned about their dreams and their heartaches, their ambitions and their disappointments, and we became friends. I should like to dedicate this book to the Natives of Interior Alaska, the Inupiat Eskimos and the Athabascan Indians. I became acquainted with, worked among, and learned to love these people. It was a privilege to work and live with these earthy, loving and extraordinary Natives] They shared their joys and sorrows with me, and as we worked together, our lives became inextricably bound together as our goals became the same. The book is an attempt to portray the life I lived with these Natives, and we shared not only the health care provided but we learned about each other, and our friendship grew and broadened, and our understanding grew. So my book is dedicated to the Natives of Alaska, especially those of the Interior. I also am very grateful to Bob Callahan for his assistance in putting this book together.
