Book Description
Excerpt from Tales, and Miscellaneous Pieces, Vol. 5 of 14 Some author says, that a good book needs no apology; and, as a preface is usually an apology, a book enters into the world with a better grace Without one. I, however, appeal to those readers who are not gluttons, but epicures in literature, whether they do not wish to see the bill of fare. I appeal to monthly critics whether a preface that gives a view of the pretensions of the writer is not a good thing. The author may overvalue his sub ject, and very naturally may overrate the manner in which it is treated: but still he will explain his views, and facilitate the useful and necessary art which the French call reading with the thumb. We call this hunting a book, a term certainly in vented by a sportsman. I leave the reader to choose which he pleases, whilst I lay before him the con tents and design of these volumes. Book Description
Excerpt from Tales, and Miscellaneous Pieces, Vol. 9 of 14 Vivian exposes one of the most common defects of mankind - To be infirm of purpose is to be at the mercy of the artful, or at the disposal of accident. Look round, and count the numbers who have, within your own knowledge, failed from want of firmness. An excellent and wise mother gave the following advice with her dying breath: My son, learn early how to say, N o - This precept gave the first idea of the story of Vivian. Emilie DE coulanges exposes a fault into which the good and generous are liable to fall. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Tales, and Miscellaneous Pieces, Vol. 1 The prevailing taste of the public for anecdote has been censured and ridiculed by critics who aspire to the character of superior wisdom: but if we consider it in a proper point of view this taste is an incontestable proof of the good sense and profoundly philosophic temper of the present times. Of the numbers who study or at least who read history, how few derive any advantage from their labours! The heroes of history are so decked out by the fine fancy of the professed historian; they talk in such measured prose, and act from such sublime or such diabolical motives, that few have sufficient taste, wickedness, or heroism, to sympathize in their fate. Besides, there is much uncertainty even in the best authenticated ancient or modern histories; and that love of truth, which in some minds is innate and immutable, necessarily leads to a love of secret memoirs, and private anecdotes. We cannot judge either of the feelings or of the characters of men with perfect accuracy, from their actions or their appearance in public; it is from their careless conversations, their half-finished sentences, that we may hope with the greatest probability of success to discover their real characters.
