Global Encounters

Global Encounters PDF Author: Paoi Hwang 編
Publisher: 國立臺灣大學出版中心
ISBN: 9860354138
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 243

Book Description
Taiwan’s status as an island surrounded by powerful nation states has forced upon it a history of permeable borders and an ever fluctuating cultural subjectivity. Originally inhabited by Austronesian tribal peoples, the island has over the centuries fallen under the political, economic, and cultural influences of the Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, and Chinese occupiers. Globalization has further transformed and complicated Taiwan’s vistas of political reforms, cultural productions, and ethnic re-composition. Such gradual but radical transformation has, in countless ways, encouraged the nation-state identity and identification to vacillate between insularism and globalization. This collection is an example of the multitude of voices that speak for Taiwan. These selected essays, contributed by scholars from different countries (Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, UK, and USA), engage with the debates on Taiwan’s identity and nationhood while also attempting to step beyond the nationalistic frame. Whereas the openness to new ideas may alter our perspectives, this collection reminds us to embrace external influences without forgetting to celebrate our unbroken, unique historical legacy.

Motion Pictures and the Image of the City

Motion Pictures and the Image of the City PDF Author: Xiaofei Hao
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3658143401
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 237

Book Description
If you’ve ever had a special attachment to a film, and also an attachment to the city it was shot in, Xiaofei Haos book will give you a fresh eye on how the city is expressed in the film by the filmmaker. From the perspective of social science, each face of the city in a film comes from a choice – shown only on the basis of the filmmakers’ selection criteria. In this process, the film becomes the cognitive map of that city. The interweaving of the city space and film language will be elaborated first from the perspective of urban studies. Then some viewpoints of tourism studies will be provided to explore the relation between the image of the city in the film and in reality. Two films about the city Taipei are looked at as case studies: A One and a Two (Yi Yi, Director Edward Yang, 2000) and Au Revoir Taipei (Director Arvin Chen, 2010).
