The birth of this monograph is partly due to the persistent efforts of the General Editor, Dr. Klaus Timmerhaus, to persuade the authors that they encapsulate their forty or fifty years of struggle with the thermal properties of materials into a book before they either expired or became totally senile. We recognize his wisdom in wanting a monograph which includes the closely linked properties of heat capacity and thermal expansion, to which we have added a little 'cement' in the form of elastic moduli. There seems to be a dearth of practitioners in these areas, particularly among physics postgraduate students, sometimes temporarily alleviated when a new generation of exciting materials are found, be they heavy fermion compounds, high temperature superconductors, or fullerenes. There have been many useful books, including Specific Heats at Low Tempera tures by E. S. Raja Gopal (1966) in this Plenum Cryogenic Monograph Series, but few if any that covered these related topics in one book in a fashion designed to help the cryogenic engineer and cryophysicist. We hope that the introductory chapter will widen the horizons of many without a solid state background but with a general interest in physics and materials.

Prior to the 9th International Conference on Reactivity Solids in Krakow, Poland a group of about 25 international scientists held a special conference entitled "Transport in Nonstoichiometric Compounds" in late Aug. 1980 in Mogilany, Poland (near Krakow). This conference was well received in view of the interaction between the participants, as well as the resulting publication of the proceedings (Elsevier Scientific Publishing Company, 1982, edited by J. Nowotny). At this first conference the participants decided that it would be desirable to organize similar conferences at about two year intervals. Thus, a second meeting was held in late June, early July at Alenya, Pyrenees Orientales, France. This conference had a larger number of participants, about 50, but still managed to promote excellent interaction between all the participants. These proceedings, with editors G. Petot-Ervas, Hj. Matzke and C. Monty, have also been published by Elsevier as a special edition of the journal, Solid State lonics, Vol. 12 (1984). In view of the success of the initial two conferences, a third meeting was organized and held at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA., 16802, U.S.A. from 11 June 84 to 15 June 84. The proceedings of this conference are presented in the following text.

The idea for this book stemmed from a remark by Philip Jennings of Murdoch University in a discussion session following a regular meeting of the Australian Surface Science group. He observed that a text on surface analysis and applica tions to materials suitable for final year undergraduate and postgraduate science students was not currently available. Furthermore, the members of the Australian Surface Science group had the research experience and range of coverage of sur face analytical techniques and applications to provide a text for this purpose. A of techniques and applications to be included was agreed at that meeting. The list intended readership of the book has been broadened since the early discussions, particularly to encompass industrial users, but there has been no significant alter ation in content. The editors, in consultation with the contributors, have agreed that the book should be prepared for four major groups of readers: - senior undergraduate students in chemistry, physics, metallurgy, materials science and materials engineering; - postgraduate students undertaking research that involves the use of analytical techniques; - groups of scientists and engineers attending training courses and workshops on the application of surface analytical techniques in materials science; - industrial scientists and engineers in research and development seeking a description of available surface analytical techniques and guidance on the most appropriate techniques for particular applications. The contributors mostly come from Australia, with the notable exception of Ray Browning from Stanford University.

Materials with layered structures remain an extensively investigated subject in current physics and chemistry. Most of the promising technological applications however deal with intercalation compounds of layered materials. Graphite intercalation compounds have now been known for a long time. Intercalation in transition metal dichalcogenides, on the other hand, has been investigated only recently. The amount of information on intercalated layered materials has increased far beyond the original concept for this volume in the series Physics and Chemistry of Materials with Layered Structures. The large size of this volume also indicates how important this field of research will be, not only in basic science, but also in industrial and energy applications. In this volume, two classes of materials are included, generally investigated by different scientists. Graphite intercalates and intercalates of other inorganic com pounds actually constitute separate classes of materials. However, the similarity between the intercalation techniques and some intercalation processes does not justify this separation, and accounts for the inclusion of both classes in this volume. The first part of the volume deals with intercalation processes and intercalates of transition metal dichalcogenides. Several chapters include connected topics necessary to give a good introduction or comprehensive review of these types of materials. Organic as well as inorganic intercalation compounds are treated. The second part includes contributions concerning graphite intercalates. It should be noted that graphite intercalation compounds have already been mentioned in Volumes I and V.
