Excerpt from Elevation and Stadia Tables: For Obtaining Differences of Altitude for All Angles and Distances; Horizontal Distances in Stadia Work, Etc;, With All Necessary Corrections; Together With Hydraulic Tables, Giving Velocities for Various Channels and Slopes The need of a table of Elevations for field use, suggested by experience, led to the preparation and publication in 1893 by the author of Table I, nearly in the form here presented, distance being in miles, and elevations in feet. Its utility has been dem onstrated in the field; the first edition is exhausted, and it is here republished in a more convenient form, and other tables added, which it is believed will greatly increase the usefulness of the book. Table II carries up to 26 the difference of level in feet for one mile. Table III gives the curvature and refraction, h2 574d2, up to 40 miles for use in refined computations.
