Systems Thinking and Viable Systems

Systems Thinking and Viable Systems PDF Author: Sergio Barile
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040028039
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 273

Book Description
In the last few decades, managerial and business studies have shown an increasing inability to explain and forecast emergent dynamics in society, economics, and the environment. Consolidated managerial approaches and business theories seem to be incapable of communicating and depicting the ongoing evolution, and new perspectives are required to support both researchers and practitioners in tracing new paths for development. Building upon the constructivist approach, this book illustrates the multiple advantages that systems thinking can offer in supporting a holistic understanding of social and economic phenomena. The book proposes a representation of the firm as a viable system and represents its functioning and decision-making processes trough a recursive depiction that can be applied for each of the multiple levels through which socio-economic environments are defined. As a result of the focus on the differences between decision making and problem-solving processes, the book enriches current knowledge about systems thinking and provides useful instruments through which both researchers and practitioners can effectively understand the multiple variables able to influence decisions and actions within a firm’s configuration. The book is aimed at both postgraduate students and researchers interested in the multiple dimensions of systems thinking.

A Complexity Approach to Sustainability

A Complexity Approach to Sustainability PDF Author: Angela Espinosa
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 1848165277
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 390

Book Description
A major challenge of our times is to understand and manage the increasing complexity of socio-economic reality. This has immediate relevance for sustainable development. The impact of recent contributions from systems and complexity sciences in addressing this issue has not filtered down into effective practice ? notably, there remain problems caused by the legacy of competing paradigms and the application of their associated methodologies. This book argues the urgency for the application of analytical tools that embody the principles of complexity management. The authors describe a theoretical framework based on complexity science with a focus on organisational and second order cybernetics, one that presents a powerful new insight into the concept of sustainability. The book also describes actual applications of the ideas in the area of organisational, societal and environmental management, and reflects upon the impact of such an approach on current practice.

Critical Systems Thinking and the Management of Complexity

Critical Systems Thinking and the Management of Complexity PDF Author: Michael C. Jackson
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119118379
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 740

Book Description
From the winner of the INCOSE Pioneer Award 2022 The world has become increasingly networked and unpredictable. Decision makers at all levels are required to manage the consequences of complexity every day. They must deal with problems that arise unexpectedly, generate uncertainty, are characterised by interconnectivity, and spread across traditional boundaries. Simple solutions to complex problems are usually inadequate and risk exacerbating the original issues. Leaders of international bodies such as the UN, OECD, UNESCO and WHO — and of major business, public sector, charitable, and professional organizations — have all declared that systems thinking is an essential leadership skill for managing the complexity of the economic, social and environmental issues that confront decision makers. Systems thinking must be implemented more generally, and on a wider scale, to address these issues. An evaluation of different systems methodologies suggests that they concentrate on different aspects of complexity. To be in the best position to deal with complexity, decision makers must understand the strengths and weaknesses of the various approaches and learn how to employ them in combination. This is called critical systems thinking. Making use of over 25 case studies, the book offers an account of the development of systems thinking and of major efforts to apply the approach in real-world interventions. Further, it encourages the widespread use of critical systems practice as a means of ensuring responsible leadership in a complex world. The INCOSE Pioneer Award is presented to someone who, by their achievements in the engineering of systems, has contributed uniquely to major products or outcomes enhancing society or meeting its needs. The criteria may apply to a single outstanding outcome or a lifetime of significant achievements in effecting successful systems. Comments on a previous version of the book: Russ Ackoff: ‘the book is the best overview of the field I have seen’ JP van Gigch: ‘Jackson does a masterful job. The book is lucid ...well written and eminently readable’ Professional Manager (Journal of the Chartered Management Institute): ‘Provides an excellent guide and introduction to systems thinking for students of management’

Book Description
The purpose of this book is to augment a basic reference to define and evaluate the phenomena and events in the world and to perceive them with a system perspective. Nurturing this reference point with the extend of different scientific disciplines would support its explanation and identification ability. In this book, we tried to substantiate this argument by ligurating different disciplines that make up the system view. In the first part of the book, we tried to define the formation of systems thinking within philosophy and logic. In the following parts, we have defined the forms of system thinking, the basic tools and the usage areas of these tools. We worked on practical applications possible in the departments and an exemplary place for these applications. The target audience of this book is people who are curious about understanding the world from all areas. We hope that the book will help the reader perceive the world as a system and help view complex systems vitally. The information provided by the authors with all kinds of selection experience and academic background has been carefully selected to bring the reader to this goal. Good readings...
