Today, when so many countries share the same transboundary river basins, unilateral water management becomes extremely critical. Joint water management, on the other hand, faces many obstacles, because of states' interests in particular function of the water. Water is needed for drinking, household, irrigation, hydro-energy, fishing, navigation, tourism as well as many other purposes, and unfortunately, it cannot meet all needs simultaneously. The satisfaction of one need often impedes the others. In this regard, transboundary river basins often create challenges among states by leading them to negotiate in asymmetric relations.This book is an attempt to address the effectiveness of transboundary water management from a social and political perspective by offering new theoretical underpinnings to understand the success conditions in sharing transboundary water resources. The author focused in the work on three conditions, i.e. institutional conditions and country specific conditions, as well as conditions of regional integrity level and role of external actors. The proposed conditions were tested on two river basins i.e. the successful one in the example of Orange/Senqu river basin and unsuccessful one in the case of Naryn/Syrdarya river basin.

International and national legal frameworks governing the trade and use of pesticides have undergone significant changes over the last twenty years. The International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides, the Rotterdam Convention, the Stockholm Convention, the Basel Convention and the Montreal Protocol are only some of the binding and non-binding international instruments applicable to part or all of the life cycle of a pesticide. Specific guidelines for implementation are often available from the secretariat of the applicable international instrument, but comprehensive guidance is generally lacking. Governments need a clear picture of their international obligations as well as guidance on the accepted international consensus on the proper management of pesticides. Upgraded national legislation is needed to align national frameworks with international norms. This text aims to provide governments wishing to design, reform or update their national legislation with up-to-date advice on all aspects of pesticide management. Although the recommendations for national legislative change are designed to be useful to all countries, the text highlights the particular problems faced by developing countries and countries in transition, offering practical solutions to common problems. The degree of water scarcity and its political, economic and social implications are felt more severely in regions like the Middle East. The Euphrates-Tigris river basin is one of the major sources of water, but also a source of tension in the region. Unless cooperation is achieved among the riparian countries, namely Turkey, Syria and Iraq, in the areas of management, allocation and utilisation of the waters of the Euphrates-Tigris basin, growing scarcity may result not only in conflict, but also in further devastation of an extremely vital source.
