New Reactions of the CB11H12- Cluster for the Synthesis of Novel Liquid Crystals

New Reactions of the CB11H12- Cluster for the Synthesis of Novel Liquid Crystals PDF Author: Julian Irving Reed
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Alkynes
Languages : en
Pages : 124

Book Description
The 1-carba-closo-dodecaborate (CB11H12-) anion and its derivatives have tremendous potential as rigid core substituents in novel compounds with liquid crystalline phases. Due to the unique chemistry of the anion, these substances could have unusual properties and applications in liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. Derivatization of CB11H12- by organic methods has proven challenging. Here we explore attempts to synthesize B-substituted ester derivatives by Fischer esterification and nitrile solvolysis. Furthermore, two unsuccessful methods for dimerizing the cluster are presented. Finally, successful synthesis of a disubstituted terephthalic acid analogue, 1,12-dicarboxy-1-carba-closo-dodecaborate, is reported.

Illustrating the practical versatility of boron, the 29 chapters are divided into seven major sections: Boron for Living: Medicine Boron for Living: Health and Nutrition Boron for Living: Radioisotope Boron for Living: Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Boron for Electronics: Optoelectronics Boron for Energy: Energy Storage, Space, and Other Applications Boron for Chemistry and Catalysis: Catalysis and Organic Transformations More than just an updated compilation of progress in the applied science of boron, this book is a tribute to the legions of workers who have spent years conducting groundbreaking studies. The book celebrates these scientists and their protégés, who together transformed boron science into the exciting and growing area it is today.

The Synthesis and Properties of Liquid Crystals with Bulky Terminal Groups for Bookshelf Geometry Ferroelectric Mixtures

The Synthesis and Properties of Liquid Crystals with Bulky Terminal Groups for Bookshelf Geometry Ferroelectric Mixtures PDF Author: Ibrahim Ali M. Radini

Book Description
The area of liquid crystals has received a substantial research effort over the last century, particularly when the beneficial applications such as Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) were realised and developed. The changes to the molecular structure of liquid crystals can have a significant effect upon their mesomorphism and ferroelectric properties. Most of the research in liquid crystal for display applications concentrates on the design and synthesis of novel mesogenic cores to which straight terminal alkyl or alkoxy chains are attached. However, little is known about the effects upon the mesomorphism and ferroelectric properties of varying the terminal chains. The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of a systematic range of ortho difluoroterphenyls with a bulky terminal chain are detailed. The bulky terminal chain consists of either a tertiarybutyl group or a trimethylsilyl unit, each separated from the core by a short (dimethylene) chain, with the other terminal chain being either octyloxy or heptyl. Unusually for liquid crystals with bulky terminal chains, the smectic phase stability (particularly smectic C) is upheld by more than the nematic phase stability, and in most cases the smectic C phase stability is actually higher than comparable analogues with conventional unbranched terminal chains. It is postulated that the surprisingly high smectic C phase stability results from a phase separation effect due to the incompatibility of the spherical bulky group and the conventional unbranched terminal chain, hence implying that the smectic 'layers' are well defined, and such definition of the layers bodes well for bookshelf geometry in ferroelectric mixtures. Two mono- and four trifluoroterphenyls with a bulky terminal chain were prepared in this work to study the effect on the mesomorphic behaviour of varying the degree of fluoro substituents upon the multi-ring system. Two chiral ortho difluoro-substituted terphenyl compounds were prepared also in this work for future ferroelectric mixtures.

Synthesis and Characterization of Bent-shaped Liquid Crystal

Synthesis and Characterization of Bent-shaped Liquid Crystal PDF Author: Kala a/p Shanku Pillay
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Bent-shaped crystal
Languages : en
Pages : 100

Book Description
The field of liquid crystal is relatively new area of chemistry, and therefore generates a large frontier of research. The ability of being able to produce high resolution display screens for use in televisions or laptop computers with a very low power consumption, has revolutionised the technological market for this product. As a result of the success of the knowledge already known about liquid crystals and their properties, and their as yet unexplored potential, it is not suprising that there is an extremely large amount of research into the area. In relation to this, in this project, a five ring bent-shaped liquid crystal, which is relatively new compound in liquid crystalline phase, was synthesized using several organic synthesis methods, such as, Diazonium coupling reaction, Williamson ether synthesis, hydrolysis and reaction with resorcinol. The compounds synthesized were characterized through FTIR analysis, melting point, and its physical apperances. Other than that, the percent yield for each compound also have been calculated. The compound synthesized in first step, ethyl4-4-(hydroxyphenylazo)benzoate was a red color solid with melting point at 235 C and the percent yield was 52.07%. In second step 3.542 grams of Ethyl-4-(4-hexadecanoxyphenylazo)benzoate which orange in color with melting point of 135 C was obtained. The percent yield from the reaction was 42.11%. The third compound synthesized was yellow color solid with melting point of 280-290 C and the final compound was 1,3-Phenelyne bis[4-(4-hexadecanoxyphenylazo)benzoate], a pale yellow color solid with melting point at range of 130-135 C was obtained.

Book Description
Combustion agents for solid fuel propellants and explosives have gained widespread interest in recent years. Their high gravimetric heat of combustion enhances the performance of modern energetic materials. Borohydride compounds have proved to be excellent candidates in this application. High-energy Combustion Agents of Borohydrides covers the most recent developments in the advanced combustion agents of borohydrides. Experimental studies covering the synthesis and characterisation of borohydrides are examined, as well as the interactions between borohydride and propellant ingredients. The properties of BHN/nano Al composites are discussed, as is the effect of borohydrides on the properties of fuel-rich solid propellants. The book concludes with a summary of the prospective development of high-energy combustion agents in solid propellants and explosives, and looks into the future development of military applications. Authored by renowned experts in the field, this book will appeal to researchers in academia and industry seeking a better understanding of how to improve the ignition and combustion performance of propellants and explosives.
