Book Description
The main objectives of this thesis are to develop a plasma liquid immersion (PLI) method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. Synthesis of silver nanoparticles is first investigated with respect to chemical parameters (concentration of precursor and of stabilizing agent, and initial pH of the precursor solution) in the aim of optimizing PLI process and silver nanoparticles in order to synthesize spherical, small-sized, and uniformly-distributed silver nanoparticles. This investigation is performed using a MARX pulse generator. Secondly, synthesis of silver nanoparticles is investigated with respect to physical parameters (pulse duration, applied voltage, and applied voltage over the interelectrode distance for a constant ratio). For this investigation, a solid-state BEHLKE switch is used in the generation of plasma pulses. The study showed that the synthesis and morphology of silver nanoparticles are process dependent. Differences in the generation of plasma discharges are observed, when using two types of pulse generators, and are further explained. Optimized silver nanoparticles, synthesized using the MARX pulse generator, are spherical and uniformly distributed with an average hydrodynamic diameter of 10nm. These silver nanoparticles were produced by injecting only 40mJ energy into pulsed plasma discharges of the PLI process with 2W in power consumption. Synthesis of silver nanoparticles at similar synthesis conditions using the BEHLKE pulse generator resulted in the production of larger-sized polyhedral-shaped silver nanoparticles.

Biotransformation of Waste Biomass into High Value Biochemicals

Biotransformation of Waste Biomass into High Value Biochemicals PDF Author: Satinder Kaur Brar
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461480051
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 500

Book Description
Agro-industrial wastes are end-products emerging after industrial processing operations and also from their treatment and disposal e.g. solid fruit wastes and sludge. The agro-industrial wastes are often present in multiphase and comprise multicomponent. Nevertheless, these wastes are a goldmine as they possess valuable organic matter which can be diverted towards high value products ranging from polymers to antibiotics to platform chemicals. There have been plenty of books published on bioenergy, enzymes and organic acids, among others. However, this emerging field of biochemical has not yet been covered so far which is an important entity of the biorefinery model from waste biomass and needs to be understood from fundamental, applied as well as commercial perspective which has been laid out in this book.

Flexoelectricity in Liquid Crystals

Flexoelectricity in Liquid Crystals PDF Author: Agnes Buka
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 1848167997
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Anticancer Molecules

Anticancer Molecules PDF Author: Hiroshi Maruta

ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
This volume discusses the value of research on tumor suppressor genes and the structure-function relationship of the corresponding proteins. The applicability of these non-peptide molecules to anti-cancer drugs is also taken up; and by focusing on contemporary research issues in the field, the book aims to promote understanding and cooperation between industrial and academic researchers.

Biocontrol

Biocontrol PDF Author: Satinder Kaur Brar
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781619428034
Category : Agricultural pests
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Agricultural and forest pests lead to many plant diseases resulting in poor yield and productivity. Traditionally, chemical pesticides have been used to control these pests. However, the adverse health impacts of chemical pesticides have triggered parallel research in safe biological options. Nevertheless, biocontrol has come a long way ever since the commercialisation of the first Bacillus thuringiensis based biopesticide (sporeine) in the 1940s, however, still there are research gaps. New knowledge and practical experiences have been added over the last few decades. This book reviews research on biological control agents, including bacterial, fungal and viral biopesticides along with their advanced formulation options.

Diffusion in Materials - DIMAT 2011

Diffusion in Materials - DIMAT 2011 PDF Author: I. Bezverkhyy
Publisher:
ISBN: 9783037853979
Category : Diffusion
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The International Conference on Diffusion in Materials (DIMAT) is the benchmark conference series for diffusion in solids. DIMAT 2011 was organized by the University of Bourgogne in association with CNRS, Dijon (France). The conference showcased new results concerning theoretical tools as well as applied research approaches. Diffusion processes affect all types of materials: nanomaterials, materials for energy, metallurgy, glasses and ceramics, but each requires its own numerical tools.Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS). This volume comprises most of the contributions presented at DIMAT 2011: 4 plenary lectures delivered by famous high-level scientists plus 88 contributions in the form of keynote lectures, talks and posters.
