Book Description
Excerpt from Synchronous Signalling in Navigation Synchronised signalling is based on a fact, the ascertainment of which is old in the history of scientific advance that disturbances travel with different speeds in different media. Light and other electro-magnetic disturbances (such as telegraphy or wireless may be regarded as instantaneously propagated; sound travels relatively slowly; and in water more than four times as fast as in air. These are fundamental facts which have been made the subject of accurate measurements and certainly require no further experiments to establish. They are the scientific bases of synchronous signalling. The practical basis differs somewhat accord ing as we consider its application to coastal stations, or to the prevention of collision. Re garding the first, we may say that two factors only are involved: (1) The possibility of simul taneously originating at a signal station any two or all three of these disturbances; and (2) the possibility of hearing and timing them on board ship. No one acquainted with what has been already accomplished would hesitate in con sidering both these conditions as perfectly feasible. Fortunately we may take even a stronger position. The method has been made the subject of a practical trial by the Hydro graphic Department of the United States Navy. All three kinds of signals - wireless, submarine, and aerial - were sent out synchronously from the Nantucket Shoals Lightship. A suitably equipped vessel, receiving signals both by chronograph and stop-watch, made a cruise in hazy weather in the neighbourhood; at in tervals finding her distance from the lightship by timing the arrival of the signals. The results are shown on a chart dated 1911 The known course of the vessel and the course as defined by the signals appear as three lines which show a quite satisfactory agreement over conditions of distance varying from one to eight nautical miles. Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588 in Telecoms

Synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588 in Telecoms PDF Author: Jean-Loup Ferrant
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118580052
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
This book addresses the multiple technical aspects of the distribution of synchronization in new generation telecommunication networks, focusing in particular on synchronous Ethernet and IEEE1588 technologies. Many packet network engineers struggle with understanding the challenges that precise synchronization distribution can impose on networks. The usual “why”, “when” and particularly “how” can cause problems for many engineers. In parallel to this, some other markets have identical synchronization requirements, but with their own design requirements, generating further questions. This book attempts to respond to the different questions by providing background technical information. Invaluable information on state of-the-art packet network synchronization and timing architectures is provided, as well as an unbiased view on the synchronization technologies that have been internationally standardized over recent years, with the aim of providing the average reader (who is not skilled in the art) with a better understanding of this topic. The book focuses specifically on synchronous Ethernet and IEEE 1588 PTP-based technologies, both key developments in the world of synchronization over the last 10 years. The authors address the needs of engineers and technical managers who are struggling with the subject of synchronization and provide an engineering reference for those that need to consider synchronization in NGN. The market applications that are driving the development of packet network synchronization and timing architectures are also discussed. This book provides a wide audience with everything they need to know when researching, implementing, buying and deploying packet synchronization architectures in telecommunication networks.

Aerospace Navigation Systems

Aerospace Navigation Systems PDF Author: Alexander V. Nebylov
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119163048
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 500

Book Description
Compiled by leading authorities, Aerospace Navigation Systems is a compendium of chapters that present modern aircraft and spacecraft navigation methods based on up-to-date inertial, satellite, map matching and other guidance techniques. Ranging from the practical to the theoretical, this book covers navigational applications over a wide range of aerospace vehicles including aircraft, spacecraft and drones, both remotely controlled and operating as autonomous vehicles. It provides a comprehensive background of fundamental theory, the utilisation of newly-developed techniques, incorporates the most complex and advanced types of technical innovation currently available and presents a vision for future developments. Satellite Navigation Systems (SNS), long range navigation systems, short range navigation systems and navigational displays are introduced, and many other detailed topics include Radio Navigation Systems (RNS), Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), Homing Systems, Map Matching and other correlated-extremalsystems, and both optimal and sub-optimal filtering in integrated navigation systems.
