This volume contains the communications and discussions of the First Inter national Symposium on Basic Environmental Problems of Man in Space, which was held 29 October - 2 November 1962 at Unesco House, Paris, under the joint sponsorship of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) with the cooperation and support of Unesco, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). At this Symposium 31 communications were presented, 8 of which were from the USSR, 8 from the USA, and 15 from other countries, all by special invitation. The presentations, which included three general review papers, were made in ten half-day working sessions by a distinguished international group. The pro ceedings were not restricted to the acute professional aspects of man in space. In fact, the majority of the vast store of material contained in this volume deals with the more scientific aspects, i. e. with problems of the future, which are con tributed mainly by conventional areas of physiology and psychophysiology, including the technical research activities pertaining to the acquisition, analysis and control of biomedical data.

The proceedings of this symposium on Medical Therapy in Glaucoma are divided in four major parts. The pharmacological introduction gives the reader a short description of factors that are involved between administration of the drug and its action at the desired position in the eye. The new and exciting field of drug delivery systems will be dealt with in this part and part II. Originally we had asked Ken Richardson to give part of the lectures on Membrane technology and basic aspects of cholinergic action. Unfortu nately at the last moment he could not come. Our thanks go to Gavin Paterson and Klaus Heilmann who were willing to take over a part of his job. Part II on cholinergic action offers next to the well-known drugs infor mation about Ocusert. Part III covers the new developments in the adrenergic field, including guanethidine and atenolol. The clinical aspects of medical therapy in glaucoma are covered by Part IV. Many subjects could not be handled. We left out the systemic treatment of glaucoma (diamox, mannitol etc.). We left out all special cases and prob lem cases. Some questions could be answered during the round table discus sion, most remained unanswered. It is clear that there is enough subject-mat ter and interest for another symposium on therapy of glaucoma.

Contributors explore a wide range of topics relating to endocrinology, including the radioimmunoassay of gonadotropins; steroid transformations in human and rat testes; hormonal control of sexual behavior in adult rats; and regulation of synthesis and release of anterior pituitary hormones both in vitro and in vivo. This book is comprised of 25 chapters and begins by analyzing a hormone, prepared from liquor folliculi and whole ovaries, that causes typical estrus in spayed rats, followed by a discussion on the preparation of a crystalline ovarian hormone from the urine of pregnant women. Subsequent chapters focus on hypothalamic control and pathways of release of neurohypophysial hormones; effect of amino acids and proteins on insulin secretion in human subjects; hormonal regulation of sexual behavior in adult rats; and some aspects of steroid transformations in the testes of human subjects and of rats with experimental cryptorchidism or feminization. Results of ultrastructural and subcellular studies of storage and release of neurohypophysial hormones are also presented. This monograph will be a useful resource for endocrinologists.
