Sustainable Governance Indicators 2009 PDF Author: Bertelsmann Stiftung

ISBN: 3867932557

Book Description
Despite the limiting effects of growing interdependencies in a globalized world, national governments still have a considerably broad scope of action when it comes to ensuring sustainable policy outcomes. The key question is, however, to what extent governments can identify, formulate and implement effective reforms that render a society well-equipped to meet future challenges. The goal of the "Sustainable Governance Indicators 2009" (SGI) project is to answer this question for all 30 member states of the OECD. The composite indicators used to systematically measure the need for reform and the capacity for reform in these countries will be updated biennially. The vast set of quantitative and qualitative data collected and analyzed by a network of more than 100 renowned international experts provides an unprecedented opportunity for cross-national comparative studies. This publication of the inaugural edition of the SGI includes essays on the key findings, methodology and on issues related to reform, such as the state of social justice in the OECD. "I am sure that the new approach taken by the SGI will foster public debate on good governance and encourage governments to further engage in peer-review mechanisms and evidence-based policymaking. Thus, the SGI is a very useful instrument for nourishing public debate and might contribute to generating societal support for change." (Angel Gurría, OECD Secretary-General)

Ecotourism in Sub-Saharan Africa

Ecotourism in Sub-Saharan Africa PDF Author: Kenneth Backman
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351793314
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
Since its first mention in the academic literature, ecotourism has been endorsed by NGOs and governments as the most environmentally sound and locally beneficial method of tourist development. Over the last thirty years sub-Saharan Africa has adopted ecotourism as the primary focus for tourism development; research into this has demonstrated mixed results. In this publication, we seek to explore the actual outcomes for African countries that have developed their tourism policy around the principals and values of ecotourism. The sheer scope and magnitude of the task means that a complete evaluation of ecotourism in Africa is impossible. Instead, included here are spot assessments of various aspects of ecotourism related to conservation, policy development, environment, governance, community and indigenous peoples in southern Africa. The studies cover a wide array of countries, including Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Though this is only the beginning of a needed long term evaluation of the positives and negatives of ecotourism, it provides a starting point from which to move forward. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ecotourism.

Transformation Index 2010 PDF Author: Bertelsmann Stiftung

ISBN: 3867932778
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
The peaceful transition of authoritarian regimes towards democracy and a market economy poses enormous challenges for citizens and politicians alike. Around the world, under widely differing conditions and with varying degrees of success, reform-oriented groups are struggling to democratize their countries and to strengthen the market economy. Good governance is the decisive factor for the success or failure of any transition process. This is the fourth edition of the Bertelsmann Stiftung's Transformation Index (BTI) which is published every two years. The global ranking measures and compares transition processes worldwide on the basis of detailed country reports. Comparing systematically the status of democracy and market economy on an international basis, the BTI also provides comprehensive data on the quality of political management in 128 transition and developing countries from 2007 to 2009.
