Many companies went out of business. Some companies not only survived but prospered, riding the changes. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the causes of the price swings in the industry and to investigate selected companies' performance and strategies during the depressed oil prices. Developments in the petroleum industry from 1981 to 2000 are shown in Chapter One. Companies were utilizing different kinds of strategies when oil prices were depressed to survive and prosper. The results were different, depending on the strategies chosen. In Chapter Two selected companies' actions and performance were investigated.
