Judicial Review of Elections in Asia

Judicial Review of Elections in Asia PDF Author: Po Jen Yap
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317361490
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 250

Book Description
In the past century, Asian nations have experienced a wave of democratisation as countries in the region have gained independence or transitioned from authoritarian military rule towards more participatory politics. At the same time, there has been an expansion of judicial power in Asia, whereby new courts or empowered old ones emerge as independent constraints on governmental authority. This is the first book to assess the judicial review of elections in Asia. It provides important insights into how Asian courts can strategically engage with the political actors in their jurisdictions and contribute to a country’s democratic discourse. Each chapter in the book sheds light on the judicial review of elections and the electoral process in a specific Asian jurisdiction, including Common Law Asia, namely Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, and Singapore, as well as jurisdictions in Civil Law Asia, namely Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. It fills a gap in the literature by addressing a central challenge to democratic governance, namely the problem of partisan self-dealing in the electoral processes. By exploring the constantly evolving role of the courts in addressing pivotal constitutional questions, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian Law, Governance and Politics.

Age-Period-Cohort Analysis

Age-Period-Cohort Analysis PDF Author: Yang Yang
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1466507535
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
This book explores the ways in which statistical models, methods, and research designs can be used to open new possibilities for APC analysis. Within a single, consistent HAPC-GLMM statistical modeling framework, the authors synthesize APC models and methods for three research designs: age-by-time period tables of population rates or proportions, repeated cross-section sample surveys, and accelerated longitudinal panel studies. They show how the empirical application of the models to various problems leads to many fascinating findings on how outcome variables develop along the age, period, and cohort dimensions.

Out of the Shadow of 1997?

Out of the Shadow of 1997? PDF Author: Hsin-chi Kuan
Publisher: Chinese University Press
ISBN: 9789629960308
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 388

Book Description
Hong Kong's Legislative Council Elections have been riddled with difficulties. The first, partial elections introduced in 1991 were tainted by the traumatic memories of the events of June 4, 1989. The elections of 1995 bore the marks of the bitter Sino-British controversies over Hong Kong's political reforms. As a result of the derailed "through train," the first general election after the change of sovereignty to China in 1997 produced a two-year successor to the Provisional Legislative Council, which in turn was troubled by the Asian Financial Crisis. In light of this, the elections held in September 2000 offered Hong Kong a new lease on life. A full, four-year term legislature was thus elected under conditions that were relatively free from the issues that characterized 1997: uncertainties over the political future of Hong Kong, the attendant anxieties of the Hong Kong people, and the tortuous struggle over reform initiatives among the political powers. This book draws on a wide range of local and overseas expertise to provide an in-depth study of the various aspects of the 2000 Legislative Council elections in Hong Kong. These aspects include: the basic conditions under which the elections took place, the role of labor, the District Councilors and media reporting, the decisive effect of the proportional representation system, factionalism in the Democratic Party, voting propensity, and the issues of identity, campaign finance, democratization, and the degree of political participation.

Business and the Risk of Crime in China

Business and the Risk of Crime in China PDF Author: Roderic G. Broadhurst
Publisher: ANU E Press
ISBN: 1921862548
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
The book analyses the results of a large scale victimisation survey that was conducted in 2005-06 with businesses in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Xi’an. It also provides comprehensive background materials on crime and the criminal justice system in China. The survey, which measured common and non-conventional crime such as fraud, IP theft and corruption, is important because few crime victim surveys have been conducted with Chinese populations and it provides an understanding of some dimensions of crime in non-western societies. In addition, China is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world and it attracts a great amount of foreign investment; however, corruption and economic crimes are perceived by some investors as significant obstacles to good business practices. Key policy implications of the survey are discussed.

Who are affected most by the restructuring of the economy, and what are some of the long-term implications for Hong Kong as an important world financial center?
