Book Description
An exquisite volume documenting Cartier's most recent bespoke high jewelry collection, destined for eminent clients and collectors. Devoted to the new High Jewelry and precious objects collection created by Cartier, this book celebrates nature's vitality, sensuality, and aesthetic force. Documents from the House's archives show that flora and fauna have been a major source of inspiration at Cartier since the very beginning. The representations are numerous, and the interpretations complement each other: figurative, as realistic as possible; stylized, between an outline or suggestion; and all the way to abstraction, with the disconcerting visual play. The jeweler's imagination and virtuosity transform precious materials and stones into splendid ensembles. For this groundbreaking new collection, the artists who create the designs go even farther than the known natural universe to visit unexplored territories: in addition to the Houses's emblematic species, such as panthers and crocodiles, we discover original creations, inspired, for example, by succulents and peacocks, or even imaginary creatures like reinvented chimeras. In this richly illustrated volume, the new Cartier High Jewelry collection is accompanied by text that highlights the privileged relationship that exists between contemporary art and nature. Artists, fascinated by the power and the mystery of the environment that surrounds us, move beyond traditional art arenas to confront the immensity of landscapes or to work directly with materials from nature. The natural world is a marvel that never ceases to inspire and seduce.

Book Description
This beautifully produced volume is dedicated to the new collection of high jewelry from Cartier. The rare and audacious association of precious and fine gemstones--like amazonite enhanced with diamonds or rubies, or an opal matrix paired with sapphires--creates striking combinations that form the foundation for a novel approach in high jewelry. This passion for the infinite diversity of stones and singular materials has been fundamental at Cartier since the house's inception. Such amalgamations generate an unexpected dialogue between contrasting elements--the rough with the ornamental, mineral with landscaped, bold colors with changing nuances, earth with cosmos. This exquisitely crafted volume--featuring elaborate production characteristics including multiple paper stocks, Swiss binding, an insert, and illustrations from the ateliers--celebrates the pioneering spirit of Cartier, its creativity, and the surprising beauty of the stones.

Empire of the Senses

Empire of the Senses PDF Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004340645
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 344

Book Description
Empire of the Senses brings together pathbreaking scholarship on the role the five senses played in early America. With perspectives from across the hemisphere, exploring individual senses and multi-sensory frameworks, the volume explores how sensory perception helped frame cultural encounters, colonial knowledge, and political relationships. From early French interpretations of intercultural touch, to English plans to restructure the scent of Jamaica, these essays elucidate different ways the expansion of rival European empires across the Americas involved a vast interconnected range of sensory experiences and practices. Empire of the Senses offers a new comparative perspective on the way European imperialism was constructed, operated, implemented and, sometimes, counteracted by rich and complex new sensory frameworks in the diverse contexts of early America. This book has been listed on the Books of Note section on the website of Sensory Studies, which is dedicated to highlighting the top books in sensory studies: www.sensorystudies.org/books-of-note

Reading Jackie

Reading Jackie PDF Author: William Kuhn

ISBN: 0307744655
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 450

Book Description
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis never wrote a memoir, but she told her life story and revealed herself in intimate ways through the nearly 100 books she brought into print as an editor at Viking and Doubleday during the last two decades of her life. Many Americans regarded Jackie as the paragon of grace, but few knew her as the woman sitting on her office floor laying out illustrations, or flying to California to persuade Michael Jackson to write his autobiography. William Kuhn provides a behind-the-scenes look at Jackie at work: commissioning books and nurturing authors, helping to shape stories that spoke to her. Based on archives and interviews with her authors, colleagues, and friends, Reading Jackie reveals the serious and the mischievous woman underneath the glamorous public image.

Eloquence Embodied

Eloquence Embodied PDF Author: Céline Carayon
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 1469652633
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 473

Book Description
Taking a fresh look at the first two centuries of French colonialism in the Americas, this book answers the long-standing question of how and how well Indigenous Americans and the Europeans who arrived on their shores communicated with each other. French explorers and colonists in the sixteenth century noticed that Indigenous peoples from Brazil to Canada used signs to communicate. The French, in response, quickly embraced the nonverbal as a means to overcome cultural and language barriers. Celine Carayon's close examination of their accounts enables her to recover these sophisticated Native practices of embodied expressions. In a colonial world where communication and trust were essential but complicated by a multitude of languages, intimate and sensory expressions ensured that French colonists and Indigenous peoples understood each other well. Understanding, in turn, bred both genuine personal bonds and violent antagonisms. As Carayon demonstrates, nonverbal communication shaped Indigenous responses and resistance to colonial pressures across the Americas just as it fueled the imperial French imagination. Challenging the notion of colonial America as a site of misunderstandings and insurmountable cultural clashes, Carayon shows that Natives and newcomers used nonverbal means to build relationships before the rise of linguistic fluency--and, crucially, well afterward.

The Devotion and Promotion of Stigmatics in Europe, C. 1800-1950

The Devotion and Promotion of Stigmatics in Europe, C. 1800-1950 PDF Author: Tine Van Osselaer
Publisher: Numen Book

Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 470

Book Description
"In the nineteenth century a new type of mystic emerged in Catholic Europe. While cases of stigmatisation had been reported since the thirteenth century, this era witnessed the development of the 'stigmatic': young women who attracted widespread interest thanks to the appearance of physical stigmata. To understand the popularity of these stigmatics we need to regard them as the 'saints' and religious 'celebrities' of their time. With their 'miraculous' bodies, they fit contemporary popular ideas (if not necessarily those of the Church) of what sanctity was. As knowledge about them spread via modern media and their fame became marketable, they developed into religious 'celebrities'"--

Your Fyre Shall Burn No More

Your Fyre Shall Burn No More PDF Author: Jose Antonio Brandao
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 9780803261778
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 408

Book Description
Why were the Iroquois unrelentingly hostile toward the French colonists and their Native allies? The longstanding "Beaver War" interpretation of seventeenth-century Iroquois-French hostilities holds that the Iroquois? motives were primarily economic, aimed at controlling the profitable fur trade. Josä Ant¢nio Brand?o argues persuasively against this view. Drawing from the original French and English sources, Brand?o has compiled a vast array of quantitative data about Iroquois raids and mortality rates. He offers a penetrating examination of seventeenth-century Iroquoian attitudes toward foreign policy and warfare, contending that the Iroquois fought New France not primarily to secure their position in a new market economy but for reasons that traditionally fueled Native warfare: to replenish their populations, safeguard hunting territories, protect their homes, gain honor, and seek revenge.

Mathematics, Ideas and the Physical Real

Mathematics, Ideas and the Physical Real PDF Author: Albert Lautman
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 1441146547
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 354

Book Description
Albert Lautman (1908-1944) was a French philosopher of mathematics whose work played a crucial role in the history of contemporary French philosophy. His ideas have had an enormous influence on key contemporary thinkers including Gilles Deleuze and Alain Badiou, for whom he is a major touchstone in the development of their own engagements with mathematics. Mathematics, Ideas and the Physical Real presents the first English translation of Lautman's published works between 1933 and his death in 1944. Rather than being preoccupied with the relation of mathematics to logic or with the problems of foundation, which have dominated philosophical reflection on mathematics, Lautman undertakes to develop an understanding of the broader structure of mathematics and its evolution. The two powerful ideas that are constants throughout his work, and which have dominated subsequent developments in mathematics, are the concept of mathematical structure and the idea of the essential unity underlying the apparent multiplicity of mathematical disciplines. This collection of his major writings offers readers a much-needed insight into his influence on the development of mathematics and philosophy.
