Book Description
PART I Health-Related Quality of Life after burn injury In order to reveal and summarize the current knowledge on HRQL after burns, an extensive systematic literature review was performed. Results of Chapter 2 and Chapter 4 show that HRQL is increasingly studied after burn injury and no consensus consists on what specific HRQL instrument(s) should be used in adults or children after burn injuries. In adults, participation restrictions due to physical functional limitations and emotional distress remained, including limitations of regular daily activities like work. In addition, burn patients seemed to be on average more anxious and/or depressed compared to the general population and a large number of patients continued experiencing pain and/or discomfort in the long term. In children, especially appearance and parental concern remained a problem (Chapter 4). Patients with major burns experienced evidently more problems than patients with mild burns, and patients with psychological problems before or shortly after the injury are frequently seen to maintain problems in the long-term and should therefore be carefully monitored (Chapter 3). In children, the psychological impact is barely studied. Paediatric patients with major burns, facial burns, hand burns, and comorbidity experienced a poorer long-term HRQL and required special attention. PART II Clinimetric studies on outcomes In Chapter 5 measurement properties of instruments that have been used to assess HRQL in burn patients were critically assessed. Results showed that the Burns Specific Health Scale-brief (BSHS-B) and the Brisbane Burn Scar Impact Profile (BBSIP), have somewhat more favourable properties compared to other instruments. To further improve the understanding of HRQL after burn injury, consensus on uniformly validated instrument(s), time assessment points and data presentation is needed.

Burn Care for General Surgeons and General Practitioners PDF Author: David G. Greenhalgh
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319291610
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 315

Book Description
This textbook on burn care is focused specifically on the needs of a surgeon. It provides a “how to do” text that presents the practical strategies for initial resuscitation, skin grafting, burn-specific critical care and ultimately guide the surgeon for the best outcomes for the burn surgeon. It provides the reader with basic pathophysiology but avoids a detailed review of the molecular science of burns. Guidelines for basic care with the chapters covering the timeline used for each patient spanning from initial resuscitation (ABCs) to managing their re-socialization are provided. The text covers the key components to the initial management of the burn patient including airway, breathing and circulation. The reader is introduced to the metabolic changes of a major burn and how nutrition and pharmacologic manipulation affects these systemic effects of a burn injury. The management of burn sepsis as well as the basic concepts of wound healing of the different depths and severity of burns are covered. Another chapter covers the basic techniques of skin grafting, rehabilitation and reconstruction with a focus to optimize the cosmetic and functional outcome of the burn. Special chapters cover management of outpatient burns and pediatric injuries. Special burns – electrical, chemical, cold injuries and finally the treatment of other diseases that lead to massive skin loss are covered. Special considerations for pain, scar management, psychosocial recovery, intentional burns, burn prevention and disaster preparation complete the text. Burn Care for General Surgeons and General Practitioners provides a reference for general and plastic surgeons who are planning a career in burns.
