Book Description
Cell Surface Reviews, Volume 3: Dynamic Aspects of Cell Surface Organization reviews the progress in the study of the dynamic nature of membrane organization. The book is comprised of 14 chapters that discuss the various areas of concerns relating to membrane dynamics. The coverage of the text includes techniques and methods employed in the analysis and manipulation of the various aspects of cell membranes, such as freeze-fracture techniques; manipulation of the lipid composition of cultured animal cells; and somatic genetic analysis. The book also talks about some of the traits and behaviors of membrane dynamics including shedding of tumor cell surface antigens; dynamics of antibody binding and complement interactions at the cell surface; and structure and function of surface immunoglobulin of lymphocytes. The text will be of great use to microbiologists, biochemists, and other researchers whose work requires a good understanding of the various aspects of cells.

Self-Organized Surface Structures with Ultrafast White-Light
Author: Sebastian Uhlig
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3658098945
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 107
Book Description
Sebastian Uhlig presents the first experimental investigation of self-organized surface structures (LIPSS) generated by ablation from different (semiconductor and metallic) targets with an ultrafast white-light continuum (WLC) spreading in wavelength from 400-750 nm. The main goal is to study the possibility of LIPSS formation upon irradiation with an incoherent and polychromatic light source (e.g. the WLC) in order to discriminate between the two debated formation scenarios. The generation of a suitable WLC in terms of sufficient white-light pulse energy, broad spectral bandwidth, and low spatial coherence for the LIPSS generation, as well as the characterization of this WLC are additional important objectives of this work.

Vanishing Fleece
Author: Clara Parkes
Publisher: Abrams
ISBN: 1683356829
Category : Crafts & Hobbies
Languages : en
Pages : 216
Book Description
The renowned knitter shares her year-long adventure through America’s colorful, fascinating—and slowly disappearing—wool industry. Join Clara Parkes as she ventures across the country to meet the shepherds, dyers, and countless workers without whom our knitting needles would be empty, our mills idle, and our feet woefully cold. Along the way, she encounters a flock of Saxon Merino sheep in upstate New York, tours a scouring plant in Texas, visits a steamy Maine dyehouse, helps sort freshly shorn wool on a working farm, and learns how wool fleece is measured, baled, shipped, and turned into skeins. In pursuit of the perfect yarn, Parkes describes a brush with the dangers of opening a bale (they can explode), and her adventures from Maine to Wisconsin (“the most knitterly state”) and back again. By the end of the book, you’ll be ready to set aside the backyard chickens and add a flock of sheep instead.

The Thin Book of Naming Elephants
Author: Sue Annis Hammond
Publisher: Thin Book Publishing
ISBN: 9780966537352
Category : BUSINESS & ECONOMICS
Languages : en
Pages : 110
Book Description
Publisher Provided Annotation There's an elephant in the room that everyone knows about but no one is acknowledging. The elephant is implicit and undiscussable and lurks in every organization. Everyone talks around the elephant and thinks that everyone else knows about the elephant. However, until the elephant's presence is made explicit, the level of dialogue and therefore the quality of decision-making is limited. Sound familiar? Using NASA's tragic accidents and Enron's bankruptcy as examples of the price of not having open, constructive dialogue, The Thin Book of Naming Elephants shows how great companies create an environment that encourages and listens to input from all levels of the organization.
