Polymer Structure Characterization

Polymer Structure Characterization PDF Author: Richard A Pethrick
Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
ISBN: 1782625593
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 493

Book Description
The different physical properties displayed by low molar mass organic materials and polymers are a result of their molecular organisation. In order to understand the structure – property relationship of a material it is necessary to first look at the interactions at a molecular level. This new edition of Polymer Structure Characterization provides readers with the background needed to understand the factors that influence molecular organization and how this affects the morphology and bulk physical properties of a material. In order to introduce the concepts, the book first looks at small molecular systems and builds up to complex macromolecular systems. The second edition has been fully revised and updated to include new examples and references. Topics covered include: organic crystals, liquid crystals, plastic crystals, polymer crystal growth, amorphous glassy materials, polymer surfaces and interfaces, colloids and molecular organization in liquids as well as two new chapters on self-assembly and biopolymer systems. The book is intended to provide complimentary material for a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in materials science, molecular chemistry and chemical physics. In addition to polymer and material scientists, the book would also be of interest to chemists and physicists studying the properties of organic materials.

Polymer Structure Characterization

Polymer Structure Characterization PDF Author: Richard Arthur Pethrick
Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
ISBN: 0854044663
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 353

Book Description
This book brings together, in a logical fashion, the way in which molecular interactions lead to the observedmorphologies in crystalline organic materials and polymers. It is arranged into self contained chapters on various aspects of materials science and includes discussions of topics such as crystal growth, polymer morphology, amorphous glassy materials, polymer phase separation and structure and organisation in materials. The main feature of this title is that, within a single volume, a range of topics is covered which normally would only be found in a number of separate volumes. It is aimed at polymer - materials scientists but will also be of interest to chemists and physics students interested in the properties of organic materials.

Surface and Interfacial Aspects of Biomedical Polymers

Surface and Interfacial Aspects of Biomedical Polymers PDF Author: J.D. Andrade
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468486101
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 480

Book Description
This book is intended to provide a fundamental basis for the study of the interaction of polymers with living systems, biochemicals, and with aqueous solutions. The surface chemistry and physics of polymeric materials is a subject not normally covered to any significant extent in classical surface chemistry textbooks. Many of the assumptions of classical surface chemistry are invalid when applied to polymer surfaces. Surface properties of polymers are important in the development of medical devices and diagnostic products. Surface properties are also of vital importance in fields such as adhesion, paints and coatings, polymer-filler interactions, heterogeneous catalysis, composites, and polymers for energy generation. The book begins with a chapter considering the current sources of information on polymer surface chemistry and physics. It moves on to consider the question of the dynamics of polymer surfaces and the implica tions of polymer surface dynamics on all subsequent characterization and interfacial studies. Two chapters are directed toward the question of model polymers for preparing model surfaces and interfaces. Complete treatments of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy are given. There is a detailed treatment of the contact angle with particular emphasis on contact angle hysteresis in aqueous systems, followed by chapters on interfacial electrochemistry and interface acid-base charge-transfer properties. The very difficult problem of block and graft copolymer surfaces is also discussed. The problem of theoretical calculations of surface and interfacial tensions is presented. Raman spectroscopy is considered as an analytical technique for polymer surface characterization.

Surface Analysis and Techniques in Biology

Surface Analysis and Techniques in Biology PDF Author: Vincent S. Smentkowski
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3319013602
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
This book summarizes the main surface analysis techniques that are being used to study biological specimens/systems. The compilation of chapters in this book highlight the benefits that surface analysis provides. The outer layer of bulk solid or liquid samples is referred to as the surface of the sample/material. At the surface, the composition, microstructure, phase, chemical bonding, electronic states, and/or texture is often different than that of the bulk material. The outer surface is where many material interactions/reactions take place. This is especially true biomaterials which may be fabricated into bio-devices and in turn implanted into tissues and organs. Surfaces of biomaterials (synthetic or modified natural materials) are of critical importance since the surface is typically the only part of the biomaterial/bio-device that comes in contact with the biological system. Analytical techniques are required to characterize the surface of biomaterials and quantify their impact in real-world biological systems. Surface analysis of biological materials started in the 1960’s and the number of researchers working in this area have increased very rapidly since then, a number of advances have been made to standard surface analytical instrumentation, and a number of new instruments have been introduced.
