Book Description
An attempt has been made in this book to study the port city of Surat during the seventeenth century. The port of Surat epitomised in this crucial period the burgeoning of international trade, and the inter play and commercial rivalry of the Europeans power.Surat was a significant centre of shipping in the 17th Century. Down to the early half of that Century, India produced all her shipping needed aimed at coastal as well as Indian Ocean Trade. Later, demand by European companies led to the production of 'European-type' ships. The study is also an endeavour to place Surat in a larger historical perspective. India had a rich tradition of oceanic trade and maritime techniques since ancient times. It was the Portuguese who supplanted the Arab traders in the Indian Ocean area. The 'Vasco da Gama era' witnessed the beginning of strong monopolistic tendencies coercion and competition.

Publisher: Concept Publishing Company
ISBN: 9788170225072
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 324

Book Description
This work marks a sharp departure from the predominant Eurocentric emphasis in Indo Portuguese studies, on the sixteenth century Portuguese trade in the Carreira da India. Such an approach unjustly dismisses the subsequent centuries as periods of no commercial consequence to the Estado da India and Portugal and relegates to an un important level the significance of the privately operated intra Asian trade. The evidence gathered and their argument of this book challenges such prevailing stereo types. Based on a wide range on archival sources in India, Portugal and England, this study unravels the existence of a thriving native operated country trade, in 'the splendid' and 'the trifling' that emanated from Portuguese India in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It not only took advantage of the vulnerability displayed and the animation efforts undertaken by the Estado da India and the metropolis but also learned to function through 'crevices' under the growing British hegemony--

ISBN: 0429946309
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 193

Book Description
The idea of transitions in Indian history emerged early when the term ‘transition’ denoted shifts from one period to another. The notion of transition itself has moved beyond being primarily economic to include dimensions of society, culture and ideology. This volume brings together scholarly works that re-examine and re-define the concept of transition by looking into a range of subjects including religion, culture, gender, caste and community networks, maritime and mercantile modes, ideas of nationalism and historiographies across geographical and temporal settings. With contributions by leading scholars from South Asia, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers of ancient history, modern Indian history, sociology and social anthropology, and South Asian studies.
