Word and Supplement

Word and Supplement PDF Author: Timothy Ward
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780199244386
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
What are Christians saying when they call the Bible the Word of God? How is that statement to be understood in relation to postmodernity's suspicion of meaning? Word and Supplement tackles these questions by bringing the post-modern theory of Derrida (from whom the idea of "supplement" is borrowed), Barth, Fish, Gadamer, and many others into critical dialogue with the often-neglected doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture.

Ancient Near Eastern Texts Relating to the Old Testament with Supplement

Ancient Near Eastern Texts Relating to the Old Testament with Supplement PDF Author: James B. Pritchard
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400882761
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 744

Book Description
This anthology brought together the most important historical, legal, mythological, liturgical, and secular texts of the ancient Near East, with the purpose of providing a rich contextual base for understanding the people, cultures, and literature of the Old Testament. A scholar of religious thought and biblical archaeology, James Pritchard recruited the foremost linguists, historians, and archaeologists to select and translate the texts. The goal, in his words, was "a better understanding of the likenesses and differences which existed between Israel and the surrounding cultures." Before the publication of these volumes, students of the Old Testament found themselves having to search out scattered books and journals in various languages. This anthology brought these invaluable documents together, in one place and in one language, thereby expanding the meaning and significance of the Bible for generations of students and readers. As one reviewer put it, "This great volume is one of the most notable to have appeared in the field of Old Testament scholarship this century." Princeton published a follow-up companion volume, The Ancient Near East in Pictures Relating to the Old Testament (1954), and later a one-volume abridgment of the two, The Ancient Near East: An Anthology of Texts and Pictures (1958). The continued popularity of this work in its various forms demonstrates that anthologies have a very important role to play in education--and in the mission of a university press.

Dietary Supplements

Dietary Supplements PDF Author: Katja Berginc
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1782420819
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 263

Book Description
Dietary supplements made from foods, herbs and their constituents are a rapidly growing market sector. Consumers often view food supplements as 'natural' and therefore safe; however, supplements are regulated as foods rather than as pharmaceuticals and so are not as closely monitored as may be necessary. With the commercial market in these products growing, this book provides essential research into their safety, efficacy and potential risk of interaction with pharmaceuticals. Following an introductory chapter, part one covers the chemical composition, manufacture and regulation of dietary supplements. Part two looks at the effectiveness of different types of dietary supplement and methods of evaluation. Finally, part three focuses on supplement safety. - Reviews the design, production and regulation of dietary supplements. - Analyses the potential for pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics interactions between dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals. - Offers reviews of important clinical studies on the efficacy of dietary supplements for range of conditions.
