Book Description
An ancient proverb goes: "It takes both sunshine and rain to make a rainbow." In a sense this book is an autobiography of a young man who experienced sunshine and rain throughout life that ended up at the end of a rainbow. The story spans ten years, from early teens to young adulthood, and relates the author's perception of the world around him. He was wet behind the ears during the advent of the Cold War and the accompanying Red Scare; however, vivid memories of this period survived intact and are worthy of sharing. This journal takes the reader back to an interesting and unique time through accounts of unusual personal experiences, some stranger than fiction. At times some historical facts from various sources have been inserted to help buttress statements. Hopefully this book will assist others to live vicariously an exciting decade of history, 1945 to 1955. President Truman presided over the national turmoil after WWII. Racism reared its ugly head again. Everyone was looking under their bed and in the closets for communists. These two themes will be covered thoroughly in this book. Yet, the era also saw soldiers returning home from the war, restored family life, the baby boom underway and more sought-after consumer items were beginning to reappear on the grocery shelves. Moreover churches seemed to be revitalized and the pews were being filled again with attentive worshipers. Church attendance for Christians was placed as high as 74%. Most of us after WW II enjoyed rock and roll music, checked out new car models, viewed movies from our cars at drive-in theatres and visited friends parked in the stalls of drive-in restaurants. In the postwar 40's, who could forget how the entire family gathered around the living room radio for an evening of broadcast shows like: Date with Judy, the Aldrich Family, Amos & Andy, Baby Snook, Bob Hope, George Burns, Judy Canova, and Red Skeleton. Wonderful sound effects helped us to visualize everything in our minds. It all s

Cold War Ecology

Cold War Ecology PDF Author: Arvid Nelson
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300130309
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 367

Book Description
East Germany, its economy, and its society were in decline long before the country’s political collapse in the late 1980s. The clues were there in the natural landscape, Arvid Nelson argues in this groundbreaking book, but policy analysts were blind to them. Had they noted the record of the leadership’s values and goals manifest in the landscape, they wouldn’t have hailed East Germany as a Marxist-Leninist success story. Nelson sets East German history within the context of the landscape history of two centuries to underscore how forest and ecosystem change offered a reliable barometer to the health and stability of the political system that governed them. Cold War Ecology records how East German leaders’ indifference to human rights and their disregard for the landscape affected the rural economy, forests, and population. This lesson from history suggests new ways of thinking about the health of ecosystems and landscapes, Nelson shows, and he proposes assessing the stability of modern political systems based on the environment’s system qualities rather than on political leaders’ goals and beliefs.

A Cold War Fighter Pilot in Peacetime and War

A Cold War Fighter Pilot in Peacetime and War PDF Author: Derek J. Sharp
Publisher: Fonthill Media
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 426

Book Description
— Historically rich in detail with previously unpublished photographs — A must-have for military enthusiasts, historians, modellers and those interested in the complexities of aircraft design and manoeuvres during the Cold War — A fascinating and eye-opening memoir that will appeal to fliers and non-fliers alike on how to fly the fastest jets in the RAF This is the remarkable and true story of Squadron Leader Derek J. Sharp and his incredible adventures. Nothing perhaps was more astonishing than his survival after striking a mallard duck at 500 mph and his subsequent return to pilot in command. That he survived to the age of thirty was astonishing; that he continued unashamedly on to a ripe old age was nothing short of a miracle. Conceivably, he followed the advice written on a fridge magnet in his kitchen: ‘Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly’. This fascinating book follows the adventures of Sharp from schoolboy to highly respected aviator. He flew fighters and nuclear bombers, finally seeing action in the first Gulf War flying defenceless transport jets close to the Iraq border. Sharp consequently survived Saddam Hussein’s Scuds and American Patriot missiles – ‘friendly fire’ aimed directly at the author. He flew Her Majesty The Queen and lived in a time long before political correctness, the breathalyser and motorcar safety checks. He achieved all that he set out to do, and more. That would undoubtedly be his epitaph…
