Quantitative Fish Dynamics

Quantitative Fish Dynamics PDF Author: Terrance J. Quinn
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0195076311
Category : Fish populations
Languages : en
Pages : 561

Book Description
The fields of fish population dynamics and stock assessment have seen major advances in the 1980s and 1990s, creating the need for a new synthesis. This text attempts that synthesis by presenting a contemporary approach for quantitative fisheries science that incorporates modern statistical and mathematical techniques. It emphasizes the link between biology and theory by explaining the assumptions inherent in the quantitative methods and models. The book covers key topics that are often overlooked in other texts, such as optimal harvesting, migratory stocks, and complex age and size-structured models. Quantitative Fish Dynamics is an ideal textbook for graduate and undergraduate courses in fish population dynamics and stock assessment. It is an indispensable reference work for fisheries scientists and others interested in conservation biology, fish and wildlife management, population ecology, and statistical applications.

Bayesian Methods for Data Analysis, Third Edition

Bayesian Methods for Data Analysis, Third Edition PDF Author: Bradley P. Carlin
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781584886983
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 552

Book Description
Broadening its scope to nonstatisticians, Bayesian Methods for Data Analysis, Third Edition provides an accessible introduction to the foundations and applications of Bayesian analysis. Along with a complete reorganization of the material, this edition concentrates more on hierarchical Bayesian modeling as implemented via Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods and related data analytic techniques. New to the Third Edition New data examples, corresponding R and WinBUGS code, and homework problems Explicit descriptions and illustrations of hierarchical modeling—now commonplace in Bayesian data analysis A new chapter on Bayesian design that emphasizes Bayesian clinical trials A completely revised and expanded section on ranking and histogram estimation A new case study on infectious disease modeling and the 1918 flu epidemic A solutions manual for qualifying instructors that contains solutions, computer code, and associated output for every homework problem—available both electronically and in print Ideal for Anyone Performing Statistical Analyses Focusing on applications from biostatistics, epidemiology, and medicine, this text builds on the popularity of its predecessors by making it suitable for even more practitioners and students.

Salmonid Field Protocols Handbook

Salmonid Field Protocols Handbook PDF Author: David H. Johnson
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 504

Book Description
This is the first publication to collect, standardize, and recommend a scientifically rigorous set of field protocols for monitoring and assessing salmon and trout populations. Includes five additional techniques that can be used with any of the 13 principle methods to supplement information gathered.Over four dozen fisheries experts throughout the U.S. Pacific Northwest and beyond contributed their time to pick, write, and review the most reliable protocols for enumerating salmonids in the field. Presented in an easy to use format, each of the 18 peer-reviewed protocols covers objectives, sample design, data handling, personnel and operational requirements, and field and office techniques, including survey forms.Standardized monitoring protocols will improve data reliability, maximize opportunities for data sharing and data set comparability, and ultimately improve the ability to assess status and trends. The Handbook will also support consistency in data collection for salmonids at the international level.

An Assessment of Potential Mining Impacts on Salmon Ecosystems of Bristol Bay, Alaska

An Assessment of Potential Mining Impacts on Salmon Ecosystems of Bristol Bay, Alaska PDF Author: U.s. Environment Protection Agency
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781500641207
Category : Bristol Bay (Alaska)
Languages : en
Pages : 32

Book Description
The Bristol Bay watershed in southwestern Alaska supports the largest sockeye salmon fishery in the world, is home to 25 Federally Recognized Tribal Governments, and contains large mineral resources. The potential for large-scale mining activities in the watershed has raised concerns about the impact of mining on the sustainability of Bristol Bay's world-class fisheries, and the future of Alaska Native tribes in the watershed who have maintained a salmon-based culture and subsistence-based lifestyle for at least 4,000 years. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) launched this assessment to determine the significance of Bristol Bay's ecological resources and evaluate the potential impacts of large-scale mining on these resources. The USEPA will use the results of this assessment to inform the consideration of options consistent with its role under the Clean Water Act. The assessment is intended to provide a scientific and technical foundation for future decision making; the USEPA will not address use of its regulatory authority until the assessment becomes final and has made no judgment about whether and how to use that authority at this time.
