The Portrait of A Political Genius Sultan Abdulhamid II

The Portrait of A Political Genius Sultan Abdulhamid II PDF Author: Raşit Gündoğdu
Publisher: Rumuz Publishing

Category : History

Pages : 248

Book Description
Sultan Abdulhamid was one of the most important and controversial figures of the 19th century. Due to both the important occurrences of this “long century” and the many years of reign enjoyed by the Sultan helped him play a decisive role in the Turkish history. Sultan was ruling a land still known as the most proper part of the globe to be exploited in an era when imperialism was harshly colonizing the “under-developed” world. And just because of that he was a man that was hardly liked. As being one of the formidable leaders of the times when the classical conflict between the East and the West was evolving toward a very bloody fight, Sultan Abdulhamid was thought to be born for defense. Even deeply immersed in an intensive conflict both inside and outside the country, the Sultan was striving for the wellbeing of his people and his domain. In this study the writer tried to shed some light upon the personal life of the Sultan and to panoramically narrate his work as a statesman. He was also concerned for the language and style to be clear and objective; and for being able to present the reader a more imaginable text he enriched the work with visuals.

To Save an Empire PDF Author: Allan R Gall

Category : Russo-Turkish War, 1877-1878
Languages : en
Pages : 393

Book Description
In 1877, when Russia attacks the Ottoman Empire, Sultan Abduelhamit II must fight a devastating war to preserve his ethnically diverse territories that stretch across three continents. At home, he feels threatened from within by Mithat Pasha, a respected reformer, who has popular support for a constitution that would curb the sultan's authority and give the people a voice in their government. Aware of these challenges, Abduelhamit's Belgian wife, Flora Cordier, hopes to remain his confidante and helpmate as he decides how to govern: the iron-fisted rule of his ancestors, the democracy proposed by Mithat, or the diplomacy that exposes his weakened military power. No matter his choice, he is responsible for the suffering of his people. To Save an Empire explores the impact of religious and ethnic conflict in the Ottoman Empire of the late 19th century on the lives of ordinary people-Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Refugees flee atrocities that incite revenge, but also arouse charity and love. A story of love found and lost, of war and its consequences. Today's Balkans and Middle East emerge from the era's political forces of terrorism, imperialism, nationalism, and religion. It is a modern story.______________________________________________________________________________"e;[Gall]...artfully brings to life the political intrigues of an empire sliding into irrelevance. The Ottoman Empire emerges as a kind of protagonist all its own, eager to become strengthened by its embrace of modernity and the West, but also anxious about surrendering its cultural and religious identity. ... A magnificently researched tale of a troubled empire that's also dramatically captivating."e; - Kirkus reviews "e;Fiction as only history can tell it, all the more moving because we know it is not fiction. ...a compelling story."e; - Bulent Atalay, physicist and author of Math and the Mona Lisa and Leonardo's Universe

The Sultan

The Sultan PDF Author: Joan Haslip
Publisher: Weidenfeld & Nicolson
ISBN: 9780297765196
Category : Turkey
Languages : en
Pages : 299

Book Description
"Abul Hamid, the Sultan of Miss Haslip's entrancing book, was born in a Turkish harem. His mother, a consumptive Circassian dancer, died when he was only seven years old, leaving him to fend for himself in the corrupt and scheming world of his father's court and to learn from his very early years the invaluable art of dissimulation. Called to the throne at the age of thirty-four, when his brother Murad was declared incapable through alcoholic deterioration of the brain, he ruled for thirty-three years as an absolute sovereign. He proved to be a consummate politician who kept his country going by setting the Great Powers one against the other. Too weak to oppose the aggressive policies of Russia by force, he thwarted them by playing upon Britain's fears for her Suez route to India and Austria's fears of a Slav-dominated Balkans. Realizing the Turkey's European possessions were a liability, he contrived to make their loss his gain by ensuring that the jealousies of Serb, Greek and Bulgar among the warring races of the peninsula should prevent the emergence of a united foe on his northern frontier. Miss Haslip has fully explored the devious intrigues of the period and the wily policies of Abdul Hamid, but she is as much concerned with the man as with the power he wielded and the means by which he secured his country's safety until his dependence upon Germany brought destruction in the First World War."--Jacket.
