Book Description
A survey of compositions in the GeGaPS system, initially based on the Beta-Sialon system (Si4A12O2N6) was carried out. Most of the samples were prepared by sealed tube melting (using a fused quartz tube) of mixtures of the elements in a rocking furnace. When it was found that these materials are sensitive to oxygen contamination a pressure melting system was constructed in which melts were prepared in vitreous carbon crucibles under an inert gas overpressure. There is a requirement for new materials which are transparent in the 8-14 micro meter wavelength range and have superior thermal shock resistance, toughness, mechanical strength, and abrasion resistance compared to existing materials. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the possibility of preparing sulfide-phosphide analogs of oxynitride glasses and glass ceramics in the GeGaPS system. If the silicon nitride structure could be prepared in this system, large improvements in mechanical properties are expected. Keywords: Sulfides, Oxynitride ceramics, Phosphides, Nuclear magnetic resonance, Infrared spectroscopy, Germanium, Gallium oxide, Glass, Zirconium sulfide. (jes).

Silicate Glasses and Melts

Silicate Glasses and Melts PDF Author: Bjorn Mysen
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444637095
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 722

Book Description
Silicate Glasses and Melts, Second Edition describes the structure-property-composition relationships for silicate glasses and melts from a geological and industrial perspective. Updated sections include (i) characterization of silicate melt and COHN fluid structure (with and without dissolved silicate components) with pressure, temperature, and redox conditions and responses of structural variables to chemical composition, (ii) determination of solubility and solution mechanisms of COHN volatiles in silicate melts and minerals and of solubility and solution mechanisms of silicate components in COHN fluids, and (iii) effects of very high pressure on structure and properties of melts and glasses. This new book is an essential resource for researchers in a number of fields, including geology, geophysics, geoscience, volcanology, material science, glass science, petrology and mineralogy. - Brings together multidisciplinary research scattered across the scientific literature into one reference, with a focus on silicate melts and their application to natural systems - Emphasizes linking melt properties to melt structure - Includes a discussion of the pros and cons of the use of glass as a proxy for melt structure and properties - Written by highly regarded experts in the field who, among other honors, were the 2006 recipients of the prestigious G.W. Morey award of the American Ceramic Society

Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0081027842
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 750

Book Description
In order to enable an affordable, sustainable, fossil-free future energy supply, research activities on relevant materials and related technologies have been intensified in recent years, Advanced Ceramics for Energy Conversion and Storage describes the current state-of-the-art concerning materials, properties, processes, and specific applications. Academic and industrial researchers, materials scientists, and engineers will be able to get a broad overview of the use of ceramics in energy applications, while at the same time become acquainted with the most recent developments in the field. With chapters written by recognized experts working in their respective fields the book is a valuable reference source covering the following application areas: ceramic materials and coatings for gas turbines; heat storage and exchange materials for solar thermal energy; ceramics for nuclear energy; ceramics for energy harvesting (thermoelectrics, piezoelectrics, and sunlight conversion); ceramic gas separation membranes; solid oxide fuel cells and electrolysers; and electrochemical storage in battery cells. Advanced Ceramics for Energy Conversion and Storage offers a sound base for understanding the complex requirements related to the technological fields and the ceramic materials that make them possible. The book is also suitable for people with a solid base in materials science and engineering that want to specialize in ceramics. - Presents an extensive overview of ceramic materials involved in energy conversion and storage - Updates on the tremendous progress that has been achieved in recent years - Showcases authors at the forefront of their fields, including results from the huge amount of published data - Provides a list of requirements for the materials used for each energy technology - Includes an evaluation and comparison of materials available, including their structure, properties and performance
