The Suit

The Suit PDF Author: Christopher Breward
Publisher: Reaktion Books
ISBN: 1780235585
Category : Design
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
A beautifully tailored history of this fashion staple—at once a garment of tradition, power, and subversion. The Suit unpicks the story of this most familiar garment, from its emergence in western Europe at the end of the seventeenth century to today. Suit-wearing figures such as the Savile Row gentleman and the Wall Street businessman have long embodied ideas of tradition, masculinity, power, and respectability, but the suit has also been used to disrupt concepts of gender and conformity. Adopted and subverted by women, artists, musicians, and social revolutionaries through the decades—from dandies and Sapeurs to the Zoot Suit and Le Smoking—the suit is also a device for challenging the status quo. For all those interested in the history of menswear, this beautifully illustrated book offers new perspectives on this most mundane, and poetic, product of modern culture.

Measure of a Man

Measure of a Man PDF Author: Martin Greenfield
Publisher: Regnery Publishing
ISBN: 1621572668
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
He's been called "America's greatest living tailor" and "the most interesting man in the world." Now, for the first time, Holocaust-survivor Martin Greenfield tells his whole, incredible life story. Taken from his Czechoslovakian home at age fifteen and transported to the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz with his family, Greenfield came face-to-face with "Angel of Death" Dr. Joseph Mengele and was divided forever from his parents, sisters, and baby brother. In haunting, powerful prose, Greenfield remembers his desperation and fear as a teenager alone in the death camp--and how an impulsive decision to steal an SS soldier's shirt dramatically altered the course of his life. He learned how to sew; and when he began wearing the shirt under his prisoner uniform, he learned that clothes possess great power and could even help save his life. Measure of a Man is the story of a man who suffered unimaginable horror and emerged with a dream of success. From sweeping floors at a New York clothing factory to founding America’s premier handmade suit company, Greenfield built a fashion empire. Now 86-years-old and working with his sons, Greenfield has dressed the famous and powerful of D.C. and Hollywood, including Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama and celebrities Paul Newman, Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jimmy Fallon. Written with soul-baring honesty and, at times, a wry sense of humor, Measure of a Man is a memoir unlike any other--one that will inspire hope and renew faith in the resilience of man.

Pucker Free Seams

Pucker Free Seams PDF Author: Prabir Jana & Y P Garg
Publisher: Apparel Resources Publication
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 48

Book Description
Pucker or Puckering is the most used (abused?) term in the garment manufacturing industry. Pick up any quality controllers report, and the first thing that will strike your eye will be “…Puckering in armhole, …Puckering in neckline binding, …control Puckering in bottom hem…” the list is endless. Buying office quality controllers are as enamoured of this term as much as manufacturers abhor it. What is it that makes it so distasteful? Why does it occur? How can it be controlled? While there are numerous leaflets, documents and articles available on pucker, we have found that the majority of them lay great stress on “inherent pucker” (only material parameters). In this booklet have tried to include process parameters as well as sewing of lightweight fabrics. All said and done, the problem is so intricately interdependent that exhaustive compilation is well nigh impossible. We are sure this booklet will help manufacturers to understand the rationale behind this publication and we will consider our effort successful if enthusiastic readers regularly inform us about newer methods to tackle the problem.
