Book Description
Census returns provide a detailed information about patterns of religious life in 19c Suffolk, revealing much about both orthodox Anglicanism and Dissent. The reader is in John Clare's world... Every county should publish its Census and see that it is done as excellently as that for Suffolk. RONALD BLYTHE, CHURCH TIMES The census returns edited in this volume provide a unique sample of mid nineteenth-century religious life. They are printed in calendared form, and their findings set in local and national context; information about land and property ownership is supplied, making it possible to compare patterns of ownership in most parishes with the presence or absence of Dissent. Chapel dates are collated with those in meeting-house certificates and printed notices, while much detail refused by Anglican clergymen is recovered, together with communicant numbers and/or information about the frequency of Holy Communion. The appendices present the evidence about places of worship omitted, and contain facsimiles of the census forms. T.C.B. TIMMINS has prepared editions of two volumes of church registers: of John Chandler, Dean of Salisbury, 1404-17, and John Waltham, Bishop of Salisbury, 1388-1395.

A Tender Lion
Author: Bennett Wade Rogers
Publisher: Reformation Heritage Books
ISBN: 1601786492
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 423
Book Description
John Charles Ryle became the undisputed leader and spokesman of the evangelical party within the Church of England in the last half of the nineteenth century, and his works continue to be read by evangelicals of various denominational stripes more than a century after his death. Accordingly, he is often portrayed as "an old soldier" of a heroic cause. While this view of Ryle holds some merit, it often obscures the complexity and dynamism of a most remarkable man. In this intellectual biography, Bennett Wade Rogers analyzes the complicated life and times of a man variously described as traditional, moderate, and even radical during his fifty-eight-year ministry. Ryle began his ministerial career as a rural parish priest; he ended it as a bishop of the second city of the British Empire. In the time between, he became a popular preacher, influential author, effective controversialist, recognized party leader, stalwart church defender, and radical church reformer. Table of Contents: 1. Christian and Clergyman 2. Preacher 3. Pastor 4. Controversialist 5. A National Ministry 6. Bishop 7. Who Was J. C. Ryle?

The Diary of John Longe (1765-1834), Vicar of Coddenham
Author: John Longe
Publisher: Boydell & Brewer Ltd
ISBN: 9781843833574
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 400
Book Description
Pocket-books and other documents of a gentleman-parson bring the Georgian era vividly to life. An affluent and clubbable gentleman-parson of the Georgian age, for forty years John Longe contributed extensively to society in rural mid-Suffolk, heading a household which included ten domestic servants, plus farm staff. He enjoyed the company of his peers, both as host and guest, and travelled throughout the region, to Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and his native Norwich. Besides preaching and leading worship, Longe trained young curates; marshalled his parishioners under threat of Napoleon's invasion; and fulfilled the onerous responsibilities of a magistrate, including supervision of the local House of Industry and turnpike trusts. John Longe recorded his activities, relationships and possessions in pocket-books and inventories, leaving a rich archive for posterity. It is these documents which are presented and transcribed here. They are accompanied by an extensive introduction, setting them in context; notes on the many individuals encountered; and full apparatus. The volume also includes plates and maps.
