Trafficked Children and Youth in the United States

Trafficked Children and Youth in the United States PDF Author: Elzbieta M. Gozdziak
Publisher: Rutgers University Press
ISBN: 0813575699
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 181

Book Description
Trafficked children are portrayed by the media—and even by child welfare specialists—as hapless victims who are forced to migrate from a poor country to the United States, where they serve as sex slaves. But as Elzbieta M. Gozdziak reveals in Trafficked Children in the United States, the picture is far more complex. Basing her observations on research with 140 children, most of them girls, from countries all over the globe, Gozdziak debunks many myths and uncovers the realities of the captivity, rescue, and rehabilitation of trafficked children. She shows, for instance, that none of the girls and boys portrayed in this book were kidnapped or physically forced to accompany their traffickers. In many instances, parents, or smugglers paid by family members, brought the girls to the U.S. Without exception, the girls and boys in this study believed they were coming to the States to find employment and in some cases educational opportunities. Following them from the time they were trafficked to their years as young adults, Gozdziak gives the children a voice so they can offer their own perspective on rebuilding their lives—getting jobs, learning English, developing friendships, and finding love. Gozdziak looks too at how the children’s perspectives compare to the ideas of child welfare programs, noting that the children focus on survival techniques while the institutions focus, not helpfully, on vulnerability and pathology. Gozdziak concludes that the services provided by institutions are in effect a one-size-fits-all, trauma-based model, one that ignores the diversity of experience among trafficked children. Breaking new ground, Trafficked Children in the United States offers a fresh take on what matters most to these young people as they rebuild their lives in America.

Suffer the Little Children

Suffer the Little Children PDF Author: Anne Lafferty

Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Most of us have only recently become aware of the prevalence of child trafficking. Often, children who are trafficked are already at risk; they are runaways, foster children or abused children. They are often overlooked by child welfare systems, as this field is characterized by high staff turnover, which can lead to low staff morale and excessive workloads for those who remain on the job. The dysfunction within the system has traumatized and harmed children within the agency intended to care for them, leaving opportunities for those who exploit and traffic children for money, labor and sexual prostitution. This story takes place in Arizona, USA. Based on data gathered by the U.S. State Department, Arizona is a prime transit and destination area for both sex and labor trafficking in the United States. The Department of Justice has identified Phoenix as one of the top human trafficking jurisdictions in the country. This story is a work of fiction based upon child exploitation.

Child Sex Trafficking in the United States

Child Sex Trafficking in the United States PDF Author: Jeff V. Higgins
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781621002666
Category : Child molesters
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The editors of this book focus on domestic sex trafficking, including the prostitution of children. The exact number of child victims of sex trafficking in the United States is unknown because comprehensive research and scientific data are lacking. Sex trafficking of children appears to be fuelled by a variety of environmental and situational variables ranging from poverty to the use of prostitution by runaway and "thrown-away" children or the recruitment of children by organized crime units for prostitution. Experts agree that any efforts to reduce the prevalence of child sex trafficking, as well as other forms of trafficking, should address not only the supply, but also the demand. In this book, demand reduction strategies are considered, such as increasing public awareness and prevention, as well as bolstering investigations and prosecutions of those who buy illegal commercial sex.
