Soft Power

Soft Power PDF Author: Joseph S Nye Jr
Publisher: PublicAffairs
ISBN: 0786738960
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 216

Book Description
Joseph Nye coined the term "soft power" in the late 1980s. It is now used frequently—and often incorrectly—by political leaders, editorial writers, and academics around the world. So what is soft power? Soft power lies in the ability to attract and persuade. Whereas hard power—the ability to coerce—grows out of a country's military or economic might, soft power arises from the attractiveness of a country's culture, political ideals, and policies. Hard power remains crucial in a world of states trying to guard their independence and of non-state groups willing to turn to violence. It forms the core of the Bush administration's new national security strategy. But according to Nye, the neo-conservatives who advise the president are making a major miscalculation: They focus too heavily on using America's military power to force other nations to do our will, and they pay too little heed to our soft power. It is soft power that will help prevent terrorists from recruiting supporters from among the moderate majority. And it is soft power that will help us deal with critical global issues that require multilateral cooperation among states. That is why it is so essential that America better understands and applies our soft power. This book is our guide.

China's Crisis of Success

China's Crisis of Success PDF Author: William H. Overholt
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108389783
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
China's Crisis of Success provides new perspectives on China's rise to superpower status, showing that China has reached a threshold where success has eliminated the conditions that enabled miraculous growth. Continued success requires re-invention of its economy and politics. The old economic strategy based on exports and infrastructure now piles up debt without producing sustainable economic growth, and Chinese society now resists the disruptive change that enabled earlier reforms. While China's leadership has produced a strategy for successful economic transition, it is struggling to manage the politics of implementing that strategy. After analysing the economics of growth, William H. Overholt explores critical social issues of the transition, notably inequality, corruption, environmental degradation, and globalisation. He argues that Xi Jinping is pursuing the riskiest political strategy of any important national leader. Alternative outcomes include continued impressive growth and political stability, Japanese-style stagnation, and a major political-economic crisis.

Making Politics Work for Development

Making Politics Work for Development PDF Author: World Bank
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 1464807744
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 350

Book Description
Governments fail to provide the public goods needed for development when its leaders knowingly and deliberately ignore sound technical advice or are unable to follow it, despite the best of intentions, because of political constraints. This report focuses on two forces—citizen engagement and transparency—that hold the key to solving government failures by shaping how political markets function. Citizens are not only queueing at voting booths, but are also taking to the streets and using diverse media to pressure, sanction and select the leaders who wield power within government, including by entering as contenders for leadership. This political engagement can function in highly nuanced ways within the same formal institutional context and across the political spectrum, from autocracies to democracies. Unhealthy political engagement, when leaders are selected and sanctioned on the basis of their provision of private benefits rather than public goods, gives rise to government failures. The solutions to these failures lie in fostering healthy political engagement within any institutional context, and not in circumventing or suppressing it. Transparency, which is citizen access to publicly available information about the actions of those in government, and the consequences of these actions, can play a crucial role by nourishing political engagement.

All Things Possible

All Things Possible PDF Author: Andrew M. Cuomo
Publisher: Harper Collins
ISBN: 0062300091
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 365

Book Description
In this frank memoir—a story of duty, family, justice, politics, and resilience—Andrew Cuomo, New York State's fifty-sixth governor, reflects on his rise, fall, and rise again in politics, and the tough (but necessary) lessons he has learned along the way. Born to first-generation American parents in the working-class neighborhood of Queens, New York, Andrew M. Cuomo grew up in a family anchored by a shared belief in community, hard and honest work, and helping others. His father, Mario, led by example, as a tireless advocate for local residents, instilling in his son a passion for public service. From stapling up posters as a sixteen-year-old during his father's first political campaign to managing at twenty-five Mario's successful 1982 bid for New York State governor, Andrew Cuomo witnessed at a young age the power of politics to effect change for the common good. These experiences, reinforced by deeply held personal values, guided him, from novice campaign manager to visionary reform crusader to Clinton cabinet member—at thirty-nine—to groundbreaking governor of his home state. Laying out his unique approach to challenging the status quo, All Things Possible is not a traditional political memoir, but rather one man's revelatory reflection on a life defined by a commitment to public service, and the hard-won truths gleaned from both his struggles and his successes. In recounting his uphill battles to redefine the way America deals with homelessness, rehabilitate the legislative process in Albany, and bring marriage equality to New York, Cuomo presents an inspiring blueprint for greater political cooperation and efficacy. He also unflinchingly examines his failed 2002 gubernatorial bid, which heralded a dark period of political and personal turmoil, to illustrate why failure is inextricably bound up with success, why we should never forget where we come from, and the importance of balancing personal and professional commitments. And he proves, through all that he's achieved since his victory in the 2010 election, that our biggest triumphs lie not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. With 16-pages of color and black and white photos

Politics

Politics PDF Author: Lucas Smith
Publisher: Quotes
ISBN: 9781520834603
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 66

Book Description
Most Successful Politicians of all Time History is filled with a vast number of inspirational political leaders. A large section of the society was impressed with these political leaders and considered their belief and sayings as revelations from God Himself. The people had something called a 'blind faith' in those leaders. These are some of the great political leaders of all times. But the question is that what makes these leaders great? Is it their charisma, their personality, their truthfulness or their selflessness? All of these attributes and many more combine to make a great political leader. These are the most inspirational political leaders of all time. Winston Churchill: "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." Martin Luther King Jr: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Adolf Hitler: "The leader of genius must have the ability to make different opponents appear as if they belonged to one category." Franklin D. Roosevelt: "Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort." George Washington: "The Constitution is the guide which I never will abandon." Benazir Bhutto: "Military dictatorship is born from the power of the gun, and so it undermines the concept of the rule of law and gives birth to a culture of might, a culture of weapons, violence and intolerance." Mahatma Gandhi: "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." Nelson Mandela: "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Ronald Reagan: "Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means." Abraham Lincoln: "Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?" How will this book help you? The study of political science is especially important to our success as a democracy. People who are informed of their rights and duties are more aware and vigilant. A vigilant society is one that is more likely to prevent or speak out against things that are unjust. We have to look out for one another, our rights, our freedoms in order for democracy to work. It is an unfortunate common view that politics is unrelated to everyday life. It is related to politicians, legal and official business that the average person knows nothing about, and should not bother with. It's an unfortunate view because politics is about life. Governments make decisions that affect our everyday life. We all know this, of course. But to what extent do we actually practice it? For a nation to move forward, its people must take their future into their own hands. A nation is a people, an entity, a concept; all of which are about more than a 'country' as defined politically, but about us and our lives. To be a patriot is to love yourself and where you came from. And to be politically conscious is to care about your life. When we see politics as something distant, we forget how personal it really is. Through this book, we will explore the greatest life lessons and secrets to success from most inspirational political leaders of all Time. Reading a quote or two everyday will motivate you achieve your goals. However, motivation is worthless without consistency. Therefore, put consistent action to achieve success. I hope this book will help you towards your journey. Scroll up and grab your copy now. Kindle Publishing
