In 1896 William James published an essay entitled The Will to Believe, in which he defended the legitimacy of religious faith against the attacks of such champions of scientific method as W.K. Clifford and Thomas Huxley. James's work quickly became one of the most important writings in the philosophy of religious belief. James Wernham analyses James's arguments, discusses his relation to Pascal and Renouvier, and considers the interpretations, and misinterpretations, of James's major critics. Wernham shows convincingly that James was unaware of many destructive ambiguitities in his own doctrines and arguments, although clear and consistent in his view that our obligation to believe in theism is not a moral but a prudential obligation -- a foolish-not-to-believe doctrine, rather than a not-immoral-to-believe one. Wernham also shows that the doctrine is best read as affirming the wisdom of gambling that God exists, a notion which James failed to distinguish from believing and which, among other things, he explicitly identified with faith. James's pragmatism, a theory concerning the meaning of truth, is shown to be quite distinct from the doctrine of The Will to Believe. In concentrating on a careful analysis of this doctrine of the will-to-believe, Wernham not only makes a major contribution to understanding James's philosophy, but also clarifies issues in the philosophy of religion and in the analysis of belief and faith.

This thesis argues that theistic faith-beliefs can be justified on the basis of evidence. The evidential ambiguity thesis concerning religious beliefs has become widely accepted. This ambiguity thesis states that there is no adequate evidence to justify the holding of theistic faith-beliefs. In response to this ambiguity thesis John Bishop has developed a Jamesian fideist theory of the justificaction of religious beliefs. Bishop's Jamesian fideism develops an account of permissible doxastic venture, or the idea that it can be permissible to believe beyond one's total available evidence. I argue that theistic faith-beliefs can be justified on an evidential basis even if the evidential ambiguity thesis is accepted. I compare and contrast subjective evidentialism and Jamesian fideism, and argue that subjective evidentialism provides the evidentially inclined reflective believer with a preferable theory of justification of religious beliefs. Nonetheless, I maintain that Jamesian fideism and subjective evidentialism are rather similar, and that granted the evidential ambiguity thesis, are the only real options as far as theories of justification of religious beliefs are concerned. I touch on a number of other theories in my discussion, including isolationist epistemology, Reformed epistemology, and various non-doxastic theories.

This book illustrates how Christianity in the modern era has been shaped in the direction of subjectivity. In the Enlightenment, after Locke required faith to submit to reason's judgment, Kant argued that religion should remain within the bounds of reason only. Schleiermacher shifted attention away from belief to devotion to Christ and a feeling of absolute dependence on God. Rejecting Hegel's system, Kierkegaard summoned his readers to a unique subjective approach to justification by faith. Revivalist Evangelicalism has been perceived, and portrayed itself, as a rejection of modernism. This study argues instead that the Evangelical-revivalist movement is unmistakably modern in its assumptions regarding the nature of faith. The Pietist impulse, fueled in part by modern anthropocentrism and subjectivism in religious belief, was appropriated by the Evangelical revivalists, such as John Wesley, George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, and, later, Charles Finney. In short, Christianity today is a religion of the heart.
