Book Description
During the summer of 2003, a picosecond Leopard YAG laser with an upgraded OPG system was purchased by the Laser Lab of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez, after the contract award was announced. The laser arrived in August 2003, but due to problems with beam quality it was shipped back to the factory to be made right. The laser was corrected and was finally installed in the Laser Lab in mid-March 2004. The laser lab is now a well-established entity for the study of ultrafast photodynamic processes of optical materials. It functions in both an independent research role and a collaborative role in the development of optical materials. The primary focus of the project this year was on ultrafast spectroscopic studies of vanadium dioxide thin film as well as heavy metal nanoparticles embedded in melting glass optical materials. This effort included research on ultrafast passive optical switching derived by the enhancement of chi(exp 3), and ultrafast photo-induced insulator-metal transition (thermochromic effect). A large part of the initial focus was to develop heavy metal nanoparticle doped inorganic glass, which has been proven to show an enhanced chi(exp 3) effect. The other focal area was the study of the ultrafast phase-transition of VO2 thin film. This part of the work was begun right after the new laser was installed. With better laser output stability and beam profile, the authors were able to accurately characterize ultrafast time-resolved optical responses. (5 figures, 20 refs.).

Thin Film Physics And Devices: Fundamental Mechanism, Materials And Applications For Thin Films

Thin Film Physics And Devices: Fundamental Mechanism, Materials And Applications For Thin Films PDF Author: Jianguo Zhu
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9811224005
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 706

Book Description
Thin films have an extremely broad range of applications from electronics and optics to new materials and devices. Collaborative and multidisciplinary efforts from physicists, materials scientists, engineers and others have established and advanced a field with key pillars constituting (i) the synthesis and processing of thin films, (ii) the understanding of physical properties in relation to the nanometer scale, (iii) the design and fabrication of nano-devices or devices with thin film materials as building blocks, and (iv) the design and construction of novel tools for characterization of thin films.Against the backdrop of the increasingly interdisciplinary field, this book sets off to inform the basics of thin film physics and thin film devices. Readers are systematically introduced to the synthesis, processing and application of thin films; they will also study the formation of thin films, their structure and defects, and their various properties — mechanical, electrical, semiconducting, magnetic, and superconducting. With a primary focus on inorganic thin film materials, the book also ventures on organic materials such as self-assembled monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett films. This book will be effective as a teaching or reference material in the various disciplines, ranging from Materials Science and Engineering, Electronic Science and Engineering, Electronic Materials and Components, Semiconductor Physics and Devices, to Applied Physics and more. The original Chinese publication has been instrumental in this purpose across many Chinese universities and colleges.

Multicomponent and Multilayered Thin Films for Advanced Microtechnologies: Techniques, Fundamentals and Devices

Multicomponent and Multilayered Thin Films for Advanced Microtechnologies: Techniques, Fundamentals and Devices PDF Author: O. Auciello
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401117276
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 625

Book Description
The synthesis of multicomponent/multilayered superconducting, conducting, semiconducting and insulating thin films has become the subject of an intensive, worldwide, interdisciplinary research effort. The development of deposition-characterization techniques and the science and technology related to the synthesis of these films are critical for the successful evolution of this interdisciplinary field of research and the implementation of the new materials in a whole new generation of advanced microdevices. This book contains the lectures and contributed papers on various scientific and technological aspects of multicomponent and multilayered thin films presented at a NATO/ASI. Compared to other recent books on thin films, the distinctive character of this book is the interdisciplinary treatment of the various fields of research related to the different thin film materials mentioned above. The wide range of topics discussed in this book include vacuum-deposition techniques, synthesis-processing, characterization, and devices of multicomponent/multilayered oxide high temperature superconducting, ferroelectric, electro-optic, optical, metallic, silicide, and compound semiconductor thin films. The book presents an unusual intedisciplinary exchange of ideas between researchers with cross-disciplinary backgrounds and it will be useful to established investigators as well as postdoctoral and graduate students.

Physico-Chemical Phenomena in Thin Films and at Solid Surfaces

Physico-Chemical Phenomena in Thin Films and at Solid Surfaces PDF Author:
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 9780123725233
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 800

Book Description
The book is devoted to the consideration of the different processes taking place in thin films and at surfaces. Since the most important physico-chemical phenomena in such media are accompanied by the rearrangement of an intra- and intermolecular coordinates and consequently a surrounding molecular ensemble, the theory of radiationless multi-vibrational transitions is used for its description. The second part of the book considers the numerous surface phenomena. And in the third part is described the preparation methods and characteristics of different types of thin films. Both experimental and theoretical descriptions are represented. Media rearrangement coupled with the reagent transformation largely determines the absolute value and temperature dependence of the rate constants and other characteristics of the considered processes. These effects are described at the atomic or molecular level based on the multi-phonon theory, starting from the first pioneering studies through to contemporary studies. A number of questions are included at the end of many chapters to further reinforce the material presented. · Unified approach to the description of numerous physico-chemical phenomena in different materials · Based on the pioneering research work of the authors · Explantion of a variety of experimental observations · Material is presented at two levels of complexity for specialists and non-specialists · Identifies existing and potential applications of the processes and phenomena · Includes questions at the end of some chapters to further reinforce the material discussed
