This is a study about how interior design factors affect student test outcomes in computer-based testing at Weber State University. Research (Brooks, 2011) demonstrates that the physical learning environment has a significant measurable impact on learning outcomes. Researchers and educators (Stone, 2008) are calling for more research in designing educational spaces. Designing positive experiences is important because emotions affect how the cognitive system operates and aesthetics can affect the emotional state (Norman, 2004). About 900 WSU students were surveyed about their perceptions of the interior design of the testing centers and its effect on their test performances. The study showed that the majority of students perceive the design of the testing centers to be good to excellent, but they noted close proximity to others, noise, and temperature fluctuations distract during test taking. An observational interior design analysis of five testing centers at Weber State University concurred that the centers are well designed but could be improved in how space is used. An ANOVA on a randomized sample of 1000 student test scores showed no statistically significant difference in student test outcomes by testing center.

Abstract : Research-based design also known as evidence-based design (EBD) is a positive trend in the interior design industry that professionals may not realize the benefits of using (Cama, 2011; Hamilton & Watkins, 2009; Huffcut, 2010; Martin, & Guerin, 2005). One potential benefit to using research-based design is the enhancement of the interior designer’s reputation. The interior design industry has focused on research-based design to “legitimize and sustain the profession, expand a body of knowledge, and increase professional recognition” (Karpan, 2005). Another benefit to research-based design is the augmentation of decision making. Entrepreneurs have found that this form of research empowers them in the decision making process (O’Connor & Ramos, 2006). These benefits have indicated that designers using EBD will have a positive effect.This study compared the measurement of empowerment as the dependent variable (DV) or expected outcome with the measurement of researched design as the independent variable (IV) or what was being manipulated in this study. The survey sample was diverse around the USA, and representative of the professional interior design industry. This study filled much needed gaps in available research in terms of reaching beyond healthcare designers to understand the use of evidence-based design. The added comparison of empowerment concepts showed to what extent using evidence based can have on personal empowerment, and self-efficacy. This study demonstrated the potential advantages of using EBD.

"The interior design professional identity has long been a topic of conversation and debate, yet little research has been done to substantiate the discussion. With a lack of data identifying the identity perceptions, as related to the commercial and residential interior design fields, this study addressed quantifying the measurable and comparative values associated with each field. The study followed a quantitative research method; specifically using survey design. A questionnaire was created to specifically address the research questions. The instrument used to conduct the survey was SurveyGold8. The survey was distributed to the sample population via email and interior design social media pages. Seventy nine respondents, comprised of commercial and residential designers, industry affiliates, interior design educators and interior design students, took the 214 question survey. The researcher anticipated that there was a perceived industry divided, which the survey data confirmed. The data also showed through comparative analysis that the industry does have a perceived hierarchical value that sets commercial design above residential design by educational expectations, technology, skill levels, and titles." -- Abstract.
