Book Description
Describes project methods and presents highlights of results from a study of Beaufort Sea belugas, involving the tracking and recording of dive behaviour using satellite-linked time-depth recorders. Over four years of field and laboratory work and analysis, 14 males and six female belugas were live-captured and tagged in the Mackenzie River delta with satellite transmitters that were used to obtain detailed behavioural data to study migration routes to summer and winter concentration areas, to understand the effect of beluga movements and diving on population estimates based on aerial surveys, and to study habitat preferences and habitat use. Results showed unexpected behaviour on the part of Beaufort Sea belugas.

Molecular and Cell Biology of Marine Mammals
Author: Carl J. Pfeiffer
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 978
Book Description
Marine mammals comprise some of the most highly adapted mammals, many with unbelievable diving capabilities, high intelligence and complex social behaviour, and some with brains larger than that of humans. Many possess echolocating and communication skills that we are only beginning to understand. This work brings together a group of experts focused upon cell and molecular biology of aquatic mammals. Methods currently being used to explore marine mammal biology are discussed, such as genetic tracing of subpopulations of whales and seals by DNA fingerprinting, use of immune system molecular markers, cell culture and ELISA techniques, and electron microscopy.

Book Description
The Encyclopedia of Marine Mammals, Third Edition covers the ecology, behavior, conservation, evolution, form and function of whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, manatees, dugongs, otters and polar bears. This edition provides new content on anthropogenic concerns, latest information on emerging threats such as ocean noise, and impacts of climate change. With authors and editors who are world experts, this new edition is a critical resource for all who are interested in marine mammals, especially upper level undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and managers, and is a top reference for those in related fields, from oceanographers to environmental scientists. - Significant content and topic updates, as well as the addition of new topics in such areas as anthropogenic disturbance - Visual maps of the oceans and seas mentioned in contributions, helping to place the geographical features described in the text with clear, consistent species illustrations - Written to help users learn new information or brush up on a topic quickly, with the references at the end of each entry to help guide readers into more specialist literature
