This study examined the ability of three personality measures to predict midshipmen attrition at the United States Naval Academy. More specifically, the study examined the ability of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and the Personal History Questionnaire to replace the Career Interest Score of the Strong Interest Inventory in the Naval Academy admissions formula and to better predict overall, voluntary, academic, and performance/conduct attrition. The data used were from the Naval Academy classes of 1995 to 2000. Logistic regression analysis was done using just the classes of 1995-1999. The class of 2000 was used in an out of sample prediction to test the validity of the study's attrition model. Results showed that the Career Interest Score is unable to predict attrition. Additionally, the addition of the MBTI and PHQ improved the predictive ability of the admissions formula for two of the four attrition variables modeled. The model was most effective in predicting voluntary attrition. Recommendations are made regarding the United States Naval Academy admissions policy and for future research in the subject area.

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of different personality traits on performance at the US Naval Academy (USNA) throughout the entire military and academic curriculum. The study uses over 18,000 observations during a 15 year time period from 2002-2016. This study builds on previous research which focuses on more narrow performance measures that are typically restricted to academic performance in a single course or subject. The data set allows for performance to be measured in each of USNAs three mission areas (moral, mental, and physical) and provides insight into how certain personality attributes contribute to success in a rigorous military environment. I find that strong "judging" types, typically described as planned, decisive, and organized, perform statistically significantly better than their neutral counterparts in every performance category. Similarly, strong "perceiving" types, described as flexible, open and spontaneous, are found to perform statistically significantly worse than their neutral counterparts in every performance category. The study also finds that black students who are strong "extroverted" types, meaning they are oriented outwardly and dervie their energy from social interactions, perform statistically significantly better in overall order of merit, military order of merit, and academic order of merit compared to neutral students.

The attrition rate at the Naval Academy is higher for minority vs. not minority students. This thesis examines the predictors of minority attrition at the Naval Academy. Three categories of predictor variables were examined: gender, academic measures, and MBTI personality type. Specifically, the study focuses on the theories of college student attrition based on data from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, as well as traditional civilian universities. Data obtained from the Naval Academy's Institutional Research were analyzed. Results of the quantitative analysis show that the standardized test used in the admissions process (SAT) held little predictive value when examining minority attrition. A major finding drawn from Chi Square analysis of the Myers- Briggs Personality Type Indicator revealed that several active personality types did better in terms of persistence at the Naval Academy. Recommendations addressed several areas of possible improvement and proposed further research regarding minority attrition.

This research analyzes USNA and fleet performance of midshipmen who come from career military family backgrounds. It is hypothesized that a military family background provides children with values that help them succeed at the Academy and in the Fleet. This thesis uses USNA classes of 1988 - 1992 to judge performance at the Academy and USNA classes of 1980 - 1985 to measure fleet performance. Performance was measured in terms of graduation rates, attrition rates and final aggregate multiples. In judging officer performance, retention rates to the LCDR boards and career promotion rates to LCDR and CDR were examined. Results suggest that a military family background may be significant in determining success at the Academy and in the Fleet. However, more research is necessary to adequately isolate the effect of a military family background.

Psychological models of personality have used trait measures to index individuals with respect to specific traits or categorical types to bin individuals into defined personality types. Both of these approaches may be suboptimal for predicting performance. Categorical models rely on rough dichotomization of data and trait models may overfit variance to rigid traits and obscure trait interaction effects. This project compared predictions of midshipmen performance and outcomes at the United States Naval Academy, specifically comparing predictions derived from regression techniques with standard traits and type variables with predictions using machine learning techniques, such as k-nearest neighbors and boosted random forests. Using data from recent Naval Academy graduates (N = 725), we first applied traditional penalized regression techniques to predict performance, specifically academic and military order of merit at graduation, using standard personality traits, types, and values. These predictions served as the baseline for assessing the quality of prediction from the selected machine learning techniques. We next built, optimized, and analyzed machine learning models, finding that their accuracies were, at best, at the level of traditional penalized regression models. Finally, we examined the optimization process of the machine learning models to identify potential optimum dimensionalities for personality predictions, finding it matches currently accepted models of personality. While the machine learning models were more complex, computationally expensive, and less interpretable, we found they did not outperform regression models.

This thesis analyzes the relationship between entry-level variables available to the Office of Admissions and plebe summer attrition at the United States Naval Academy (USNA). The study used independent samples t-tests and linear regression analysis to analyze the effects of individual variables on plebe summer attrition and also used binary logistic regression to develop an overall predictive model of plebe summer attrition. Analysis was conducted on the USNA classes that completed plebe summer from 1995-2002 (N = 9,554). The results of this study indicate the highest plebe summer attrition is attributed to majority females, females in general and midshipmen who exceed the limits of the height/weight table and are not recruited athletes. The lowest plebe summer attrition rates are found among children of service academy graduates, recruited varsity athletes, summer seminar attendees, minority males and older midshipmen. This study summarizes the results and also offers recommendations to the Naval Academy and for future research.
