Explosion generated surface waves in deep water is discussed. The tests will be carried out at pressures as low as 0.001 atmosphere in a large (10 ft diameter, 20 ft long) cylindrical vacuum vessel within which will be placed a rectangular tank (4 ft wide, 13 ft long, and 6 ft deep) filled to a depth of 5 ft with an inhibited transformer oil. The early events following detonations both above and below the fluid surface will be documented with high-speed motion picture photography. Four locations in the vertical will be examined with energy releases of from 1 to 300 calories. Both exploding wires and chemical explosives will be used as sources. Some preliminary tests with wires exploded in water at normal atmospheric pressure are described. (Author).

The objectives of the study are: to develop a mathematical model appropriate for analysis of the behavior of surface effect vehicles (SEV) in unusually large waves; and subsequently to apply this model to investigate the vulnerability of these vehicles to explosion generated waves. The generation of surface waves due to an explosion is modeled mathematically as a function of the explosive yield, detonation depth and water depth. Further, the dynamic property of the propagated waves is treated to vary with the local water depth. The SEV dynamics are modeled mathematically by considering the vehicle as a rigid body having six degrees of freedom in space subject to an appropriate constraint derived from the cushion air dynamics as well as to the environmental excitations due to waves. Non-linear contributions including effects due to large motions, viscous flows, and control logics are considered and vehicle responses are solved numerically through time domain simulations. Analyses have been conducted using this analytical model to examine the potential threat of underwater explosions to a typical 2000-ton class SES, and the operational envelopes for such a vehicle in explosion generated wave environments are developed and discussed.

Particular importance has been stressed on the data presentation in order to facilitate the use of this prediction method by those unfamiliar with the complicated analysis of the phenomena involved. The data is presented, in large, by graphical means and the user may obtain all pertinent information about the initial wave envelope by merely reading a series of graphs and performing some elementary multiplications.
