Book Description
Excerpt from Studies on the Tobacco Crop of Connecticut Wrapper leaf tobacco, the only type of leaf raised in this state, is our largest cash crop. The government crop report for 1912 shows that tobacco was grown on 17,500 acres in Connecticut, that the yield was over twenty-nine million seven hundred and fifty thousand pounds and that the value on the farm was more than seven million one hundred thousand dollars, exceeding that of all cereals grown in Connecticut, of all the timothy and clover, and more than half as large as that of all the forage crops. This Station has been called upon to help growers in such ways as it could to improve the quality, increase the quantity and decrease the cost of growing the crop. The results of this work have been printed from time to time during the last twenty years, but the demand from within and without the state has exhausted the supply of bulletins and reports on the subject. As the call for them still continues, the following summary of our results has been prepared, with references to our original reports which can be found in libraries if more detailed study of any topic is desired and also to the valuable work which has been done elsewhere on tobacco of the cigar-wrapper type but which cannot be adequately described within the limits alloted to this bulletin. How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease PDF Author: United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Government publications
Languages : en
Pages : 728

Book Description
This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States

Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309142393
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 348

Book Description
Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.

Smokeless Tobacco and Some Tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines

Smokeless Tobacco and Some Tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines PDF Author: IARC Working Group on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans
Publisher: World Health Organization
ISBN: 9283212894
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 642

Book Description
This eighty-ninth volume of the IARC Monographs is the third and last of a series on tobacco-related agents. Volume 83 reported on the carcinogenicity of tobacco smoke and involuntary smoking (second-hand smoke or environmental tobacco smoke) (IARC 2004a). Volume 85 summarized the evidence on the carcinogenic risk of chewing betel quid with and without tobacco (IARC 2004b). That volume explored the variety of products chewed in South Asia and other parts of the word that contain areca nut in combination with other ingredients, often including tobacco. In this eighty-ninth volume, the carcinogenic risks associated with the use of smokeless tobacco, including chewing tobacco and snuff, are considered in a first monograph. The second monograph reviews some tobacco-specific nitrosamines. These agents were evaluated earlier in Volume 37 of the Monographs (IARC 1985) and information gathered since that time has been summarized and evaluated.

Rice in Malaya

Rice in Malaya PDF Author: R.D. Hill
Publisher: NUS Press
ISBN: 9971695774
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
Rice is a staple part of the diet of virtually every Malaysian, to the extent that in each of the major languages used in Malaysia, rice means food and food means rice. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Rice in Malaya opens with an examination of the often fragmentary evidence of rice-growing in prehistoric Southeast Asia "the original home of this all-important crop" and then considers the great changes that followed the rise of commercial agriculture in the region before and during colonial times. A pioneering work when it first appeared in 1977, Rice in Malaya successfully combined the area-by-area approach of the geographer with the period-by-period approach of the historian to give a well-balance picture of rice-growing. The comprehensive use of evidence in several languages made the study the definitive work in the field. This re-issue of Rice in Malaya makes a classic work of scholarship available to a new generation of readers. The book remains of great importance not only to geographers, historians, agriculturalists and economists but also to anyone with an interest in Southeast Asia, for it explains in great measure many of the deeply-etched patterns of life found in modern Malaysia.
