The Role of the Electronics Industry in Economic Development

The Role of the Electronics Industry in Economic Development PDF Author: Bhausaheb Ubale

Languages : en
Pages : 363

Book Description
This study is concerned with the examination of the role of the electronics industry in the development of developing countries. The electronics, which is a backbone of modern industrial activities, has stimulated growth in developed countries. The main aim of this study, therefore, is to test whether the consumption and production of electronics could stimulate similar growth in developing countries. With this object in view we have focused our attention upon answering two basic questions: viz., 1) What impact do electronics have on the development of the developing countries? 2) If the electronics industry were found to be vital to developing countries, do the developing countries possess the necessary resources to undertake production of electronics technology and products? The answers to these questions are presented in two parts. In Part 1, we have attempted to answer the first question using analytical techniques. We have observed that consumption and production of electronics will create technological transformation in the economy and thereby accelerate the speed of development. We have also analysed the technological characteristics of electronics and found that the continuous chain of innovations produced by the electronics industry has created significant impact on the growth of the economy via both investment and technological multiplier effects. In the light of this discussion, some general hypotheses were suggested to the effect, that the growth of the electronics industry has a significant contribution to the growth of the economy. Part II deals with providing answers to the second question which takes the form of an empirical examination of industry's structure, vertically as well as horizontally. The former deals with the economics and production aspects of the electronic products and technology at the national level, and the latter with the production at the global level. As a case study, we studied the U.K. electronics industry for an in-depth investigation into its vertical structure. For a global examination, we analysed the following aspects, such as : growth trends in selected countries, both developed and developing; the role of multinational companies in international production; their impact on the economy of a developing country; and the trends in the international consumption of electronics. On the basis of this analysis, we assessed the potentialities of the electronics industry for developing countries and found that because of the dominating position held by multinational companies in technology, production and marketing of electronic products, the prospects for developing countries to promote the growth of their own industry are extremely limited. We have, therefore, suggested a co-operative strategy on the part of the developed and developing countries to organise the production of electronics at the international level. This research has been conducted in the face of severe limitation of data and information with respect to the electronics industry. There has been a relative absence of any academic research in this industry, particularly in relation to the problems and aspirations of the developing countries to promote the growth of such industry. This industry, as we see in this thesis, is organised and operated at an international level and, consequently, any analysis of its structure assumes an international dimension. Hence, we found that a detailed and systematic examination of the electronics industry at the international level was very essential, in order to explore its potentialities for any developing country. To that end, this thesis has made, we hope, some significant contribution.

The Competitive Status of the U.S. Electronics Industry

The Competitive Status of the U.S. Electronics Industry PDF Author: John G. Linvill
Publisher: National Academies
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 154

Book Description
This eight-chapter report is one of seven industry-specific studies conducted to identify global shifts of industrial technological capacity on a sector-by-sector basis, to relate those shifts in international competitive industrial advantage to technological and other factors, and to assess future prospects for further technological change and industrial development. The methodology of the studies included a series of panel meetings involving discussions between experts, resource personnel, and government agency and congressional representatives. Chapters 1, 2, and 3 examine, respectively, the challenge to United States' leadership in electronics, financial and human resource constraints, and barriers to international trade. Chapters 3 to 7 focus respectively on: the semiconductor industry (considering its size, structure, and international position, the semiconductor manufacturing process, and bases for competition); the computer industry (considering its size, structure, and international position, its changing economics, and bases for competition); the telecommunications industry (considering its size, structure, and international position, developments in transmission technology, and bases for competition); and the consumer electronics industry (examining its size and international position and the factors of Japanese success in the industry). Chapter 8 considers research, capital formation, human resource, and international trade policy options for the U.S. electronics industry. (JN)

International Competitiveness in Electronics

International Competitiveness in Electronics PDF Author: Congress of the U.S., Washington, DC. Office of Technology Assessment
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1428923969
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 543

Book Description
This assessment continues the Office of Technology Assessment's (OTA) exploration of the meaning of industrial policy in the United States context, while also examining the industrial policies of several U.S. economic rivals. The major focus is on electronics, an area which virtually defines "high technology" of the 1980's. The assessment sets the characteristics of the technology itself alongside other forces that exert major influences over international competitiveness. Specific areas addressed include: electronics technology; structure, trade, and competitiveness in the international electronics industry; quality, reliability, and automation in manufacturing; role of financing in competitiveness and electronics; human resources (education, training, management); employment effects; national industrial policies; and U.S. trade policies and their effects. The report concludes by outlining five options for a U.S. industrial policy, drawing on electronics for examples of past and prospective impacts, as well as on OTA's previous studies of the steel and automotive industries. A detailed summary and introductory comments are included. Also included in appendices are case studies in the development and marketing of electronics products, a discussion of offshore manufacturing, and a glossary of terms used in the assessment. (JN)

The Globalization of Corporate R & D

The Globalization of Corporate R & D PDF Author: Prasada Reddy
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134629133
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
"In this study, Prasada Reddy addresses several fundamental questions: What are the driving forces behind this phenomenon? Why are these new trends mainly visible among companies dealing with new science-based technologies, such as electronics or new materials? And what are the implications of this trend for 'host' countries?" "The book presents important new research material, in the form of detailed case studies of India and Singapore, and offers an evolutionary theoretical basis for comprehending the processes at work. As a result, the book illuminates our understanding of both the behaviour of transnational corporations, and the broader processes of globalization." "Globalization of Corporate R & D will be of interest to those working in the fields of development studies, economics or international business."--Jacket

The Fourth Industrial Revolution

The Fourth Industrial Revolution PDF Author: Klaus Schwab
Publisher: Currency
ISBN: 1524758876
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
World-renowned economist Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, explains that we have an opportunity to shape the fourth industrial revolution, which will fundamentally alter how we live and work. Schwab argues that this revolution is different in scale, scope and complexity from any that have come before. Characterized by a range of new technologies that are fusing the physical, digital and biological worlds, the developments are affecting all disciplines, economies, industries and governments, and even challenging ideas about what it means to be human. Artificial intelligence is already all around us, from supercomputers, drones and virtual assistants to 3D printing, DNA sequencing, smart thermostats, wearable sensors and microchips smaller than a grain of sand. But this is just the beginning: nanomaterials 200 times stronger than steel and a million times thinner than a strand of hair and the first transplant of a 3D printed liver are already in development. Imagine “smart factories” in which global systems of manufacturing are coordinated virtually, or implantable mobile phones made of biosynthetic materials. The fourth industrial revolution, says Schwab, is more significant, and its ramifications more profound, than in any prior period of human history. He outlines the key technologies driving this revolution and discusses the major impacts expected on government, business, civil society and individuals. Schwab also offers bold ideas on how to harness these changes and shape a better future—one in which technology empowers people rather than replaces them; progress serves society rather than disrupts it; and in which innovators respect moral and ethical boundaries rather than cross them. We all have the opportunity to contribute to developing new frameworks that advance progress.
