Book Description
Excerpt from Studies on the Movement of Soil Moisture It is clearly recognized that the analogy is imperfect in that the capillary potential and resistance to flow are dependent upon the moisture content of the soil, whereas electrical and thermal resistance are practically independent of the amount of current and heat passmg. Nevertheless this point of view and method of attacking the problem promise to become very helpful, and are believed to be a distinct advance In the treatment of a subject which has hitherto suffered on account of serio'us experimental difficulties and the lack of a coherent guiding theory. Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in Soil Moisture, Vol. 1 The appearance recently of a paper by B. A. Keen (j. A. Se, Vol. X, 44, which gives an admirable resume of the work so far published on the mportant subject of soil moisture, has caused me to consider it advisable to give a preliminary account of the lines of work on this subject which have been developed at Lyallpur since 1917. It is probably unnecessary to refer here to the overwhelming insistence of the demand in a Punjab irrigation colony for research into the problems presented by the agriculture of such tracts, which involve the elucidation of the factors controlling the movement of moisture in the soil. That any investigation into these problems involves an attack from many directions is obvious when the complexity of the subject is considered. But to wait for the final convergence of a series of independent lines of investiga tion unduly postpones the publication of ideas and results which may be of use to workers in the subject and which may interest others who may give assistance. I therefore make no apology for the fact that much of the work described hereinafter is at present very incomplete beyond the statement that I hope at not far distant dates to continue this paper in a series of parts, describing in detail the work which has been performed in each division of the subject. Book Description
Excerpt from The Mechanics of Soil Moisture It is intended in this bulletin to present the application of certain dynamical principles to the problems attending the movement and retention of soil moisture. Among these problems may be mentioned the capacity of a soil for water, the adjustment of water between a dry and a wet soil, the relation of texture, structure, and temperature to the water capacity, and the effect of fertilizers upon the water content of a soil. Soil-Moisture Constants and Their Variation (Classic Reprint)

Soil-Moisture Constants and Their Variation (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Walter M. Broadfoot

Book Description
Excerpt from Soil-Moisture Constants and Their Variation This paper summarizes the data gathered in the library and the field. The authors believe that it may be a useful reference for other researchers. For students, it may illustrate the fact that soil-moisture constants, far from being fixed, vary considerably with the physical condition of the soil. Some explanation is due of the procedure followed in compiling the information, together with some precautions as to its use. The data are from 901 samples of surface soil and 400 samples of subsoil. Data from published sources were combined with those obtained in studies at the Vicksburg Research Center. Book Description
Excerpt from Soil Moisture: A Record of the Amount of Water Contained in Soils During the Month of June, 1895 The records showing the conditions in the West are all commented upon directly under the diagrams. AS a rule, during th1s favorable season the fields under ordinary cultivation and those which had been subsoiled and subsequently cultivated do not Show very different mois ture conditions. In some places the-effect of cultivation is not appar ent upon the moisture content of Soils. For reasons which have already been, given it is not to be expected that cultivation would Show a very marked effect upon the amount of. Moisture in the soil either in a very dry season or in a very favorable sea-son with frequent rains. The time when it would have its maximum effect would be after a wet season and when a dry period was coming on. The moisture content at this time should fall much more gradually in the cultivated than in the uncultivated land. This is shown to a slight extent in some of the records, but not to such an extent as would seem likely to occur under the most intelligent Cultivation of the soil. The small amount of data which has been collected is not sufficient, however, to warrant a close and final judgment in this matter. Not illustrated. 1920 edition. Excerpt: ...more water at the commencement than near the end of the experiment. It shows, also, a more uniform use by the heavier soils. It shows, for instance, that the soil in flume 54 had used relatively more than twice as much water as any other flume at the end of the first day, while on the fifteenth day it had used relatively only about one-fiftli more than the others. Table 20 showrs the amount of water required at different periods of time to advance the moisture in the flumes an average distance of 1 inch. For instance, on the third day, flume 24 had used 18 liters of water and the moisture had advanced 44.15 inches, or an average of 479 cubic centimeters of water was required per inch. A comparison of the figures in Table 20 with the moisture equivalents of the soils appears to show no close relation. However, in a general way the greater the moisture equivalent the greater the quantity of water required to advance the moisture 1 inch. It is ob147697--20--Bull. 835 3 Table 19.--Water used, by days, in percentages of total use in 30 days. served in nearly all of the flumes that less water is required per inch about the third day than at any other time. In all cases, however, more water was required per inch at the end than was required at the beginning of the experiment. It is observed that for soils of the heavier type represented in flume 54, for some time after the commencement of the experiment less water is required per inch than for the following day, but after about the thirtieth day there is a very rapid increase of the water requirements. It is probable that there is some concentration of moisture at the top of the vertical lift before the moisture changes direction to the inclined part of the flume and that this moisture is...
